| Accelerating the development of a new generation of artificial intelligence is an crucial strategy to enhance the global competitiveness of science and technology, and an important strategic resource to promote the leapfrog development of China’s science and technology, industrial optimization and upgrading, and the overall improvement of productivity.Chapter Nine of Machine Intelligence: From Digital Workshop to Intelligent Manufacturing is selected for the translation material of this report. The source text describes in detail how enterprises need to replace the traditional isolated industrial production mode with a networked, clustered, and intelligent production management mode, and provides a solid foundation for promoting the implementation of intelligent manufacturing in enterprises. This translation practice examines and explores the characteristics and techniques of translating scientific and technical texts using British translator Peter Newmark’s text-types theory.Newmark divided text-types into three main categories: expressive text, informative text and vocative text.Machine Intelligence: From Digital Workshop to Intelligent Manufacturing belongs mainly to the informative text and contains a lot of terminology, objective and logical statements and great accurate expression with the characteristic features of an informative text.Based on the text-types theory combined with communicative translation and semantic translation strategies, the translation of terminology, abbreviations and phrase titles are studied at the lexical level;at the syntactic level, the translation of non-subjective sentences, the conversion of the passive voice and the translation of long and difficult sentences are analyzed with examples;at the textual level, the translation strategies and methods used to maintain the cohesion and coherence of the text are mainly discussed.By combining theory and practice, the purpose of this report is to provide a reference for the theoretical application and translation method selection of technology text translation in the field of intelligent manufacturing. This translation practice report is mainly divided into five parts. The first part introduces the task, which explains the research content and significance of this task and summarizes the structure and content of the whole text. The second part is devoted to the translation process, which is divided into before translation, while translation and after translation, presenting the main contents of each stage of the practical work and the solutions to difficulties encountered.Part three introduces Newmark’s text-types theory and explains how to translate technology texts under its guidance.Part four is a case study of translation practice. It analyzes the translation of technology texts under the guidance of Newmark’s text-types theory at three levels: lexical, syntactic and textual, taking into account the content cases in translation practice. The fifth part is conclusion which summarizes the relevance of Newmark’s text-types theory to the translation of technology texts in this translation practice, and reflects the shortcomings of the translator’s knowledge and skill in using translation tools. |
