This translation report is based on the second and fourth chapters of Routledge International Handbook of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology. The book consists of the works of well-known scholars in theoretical psychology and philosophical psychology.Focusing on the translation of hedges in this academic text, this report summarizes major translation problems and corresponding solutions. To ensure the preciseness and objectivity of this academic text,a considerable number of hedges are used to correct the content of the discourse and avoid absolutism of expression. In the process of translation,it is a significant challenge for the translator to fulfill the function of hedges while taking into consideration the stylistic characteristics of this academic text. The translator mainly analyzes the translation of approximators and shields. While translating these hedges, firstly, the translator takes into account the contextual background of the source text and comprehends the pragmatic effects of hedges.Subsequently, the translator mainly adopts free translation method and some translation techniques, such as extension, conversion, addition, substitution, and syntactical readjustment,to deal with these problems. While writing this translation report, the translator has a more comprehensive understanding of hedges and academic texts. The translator summarizes appropriate solutions to the translation of hedges through specific cases, attempting to provide some references for the translation of academic texts and hedges in the future.
