As a documentary image text, rural documentaries always occupy a prominent position in the space, because it is not only the narrative place that the public first perceives, but also writes about the historical ups and downs of rural space. However,in the narrative theory of rural documentaries, space has never been a subject of gaze, but rather a dynamic narrative carrier, such as sacred space, relational space, psychological space, etc.,which deeply explores the narrative significance of space.Under the theoretical guidance of spatial narratology, this article will take rural documentaries as the research object, combine excellent documentaries such as "Remembering Homesickness","Chinese Villages","Beautiful Countryside",and graduate works "Villages on Wooden Planks",explore the spatial narrative issues of rural documentaries,in order to enrich the research direction of rural documentaries.Firstly,at the level of "geographical space",rural documentaries showcase the cultural beliefs, social practices, and social relationships inherent in the rural daily Tibetan living landscape through three dimensions: "fields","residences",and "ancestral halls".This is the source of the humanistic value of rural documentaries.Secondly,at the level of "textual space",rural documentaries are characterized by narrative strategies such as audio-visual rhetoric, fractal narrative, and spatial juxtaposition, constantly questioning the rural memory texture deep in the minds of the public.Among them, the use of audio-visual symbols depicts the rural space of the masses; When fractal narrative connects the causal logic of rural spatial narrative,it also strengthens and weaves the memory of the public’s rural space through the "juxtaposition" technique.Thirdly,at the level of "relationship space",rural documentaries construct narrative discourse on rural society through spatial comparison between "society" and "characters".Among them, the social relationship space is defined and shaped from three dimensions: "state","market",and "aesthetics";The character relationship space condenses rural social relationships by focusing on the attention of characters and creators, and conveys interpersonal relationships to the public.Fourthly, from the perspective of "psychological space",rural documentaries not only imbue the space with psychological color through textual rhetoric and imagery, but also reflect their own psychological activities through the shape and behavior of characters. They also engage with the audience’s attention and understanding, and strengthen the psychological presupposition of rural space. Finally, the study of spatial narrative in rural documentaries not only has academic value, but also fills with creative value. On the one hand,it creates unique image production from the perspectives of narrative structure, narrative discourse, and narrative subject perception. On the other hand, the design of spatial forms, intertextuality between spaces, emotional spatialization, and sound scene creation practice are also worth pondering.
