The journalists’ guild was a freelance group formed by individual journalists serving various newspapers, which started in the 1920s and flourished in Shanghai, and later sprang up all over the country. In the late 1930s,with the further development of the newspaper industry in Hong Kong, local journalists in Hong Kong also formed the Hong Kong Press Club on their own initiative.Unlike other journalists’ associations, the Hong Kong Press Club was founded with the mission of "working for the war effort",which provided a direction for its charitable activities and added the nature of a charitable organization to that of a freelance group. The philanthropic activities of the Hong Kong Press Club were driven by the general social environment, but also by the group’s proactive choice.During this period,Hong Kong’s philanthropy was deeply affected by the war against Japan, and the massive influx of refugees into Hong Kong made it difficult to provide relief;as Hong Kong was an important channel for supplies from the mainland during the war, philanthropy inevitably took on the responsibility of supporting the war effort. As the government pursued the management concept of "small government, big society",its charitable efforts were insufficient, and private forces were needed to undertake the corresponding social relief work. Therefore, during this period, the public generally had a high motivation to participate in charity, and a large number of social relief groups were established, and charity activities flourished.Under this charitable atmosphere, the charitable activities of the Hong Kong Press Club were promoted. In addition, the leadership of the Hong Kong Press Club is composed of senior newspaper professionals in Hong Kong, who not only have extensive social contacts and rich journalistic resources, but also the group itself has extensive contacts with other news, sports, relief and other social organizations, and has the ability to initiate charitable activities. At the same time, the professional development needs of journalists are also the endogenous motivation for the charitable activities of the Hong Kong Press Club.Based on practical needs and organizational development, the Hong Kong Press Club not only frequently conducts charitable activities of different scales and purposes, but is also active in the charitable activities of other social organizations, coordinating with all parties involved in charitable activities and assisting them in carrying out charitable activities. At the same time, the Hong Kong Press Club has integrated the concept of charity into its news reporting and work, forming a regular development of charity activities. The Hong Kong Press Club makes full use of its social resources and plays different roles in society, forming a "full range" of charity participation: using leadership to initiate charity activities and become the source of charity;using social power to coordinate all parties and enhance the efficiency of the activities;participating in activities as a performer and doing it themselves;using journalistic resources to promote the campaign and expand the audience;using credibility to monitor the campaign. The campaign press resources promote the campaign and expand the audience;use the credibility to monitor the campaign and improve the charity environment. The presentation of charitable activities is closely related to the effectiveness of charity, and the Journalists’ Guild’s charitable activities are rich and diverse, including voluntary theater, various sports charity tournaments, charity swap meets, and fashion exhibitions, etc.,from traditional to modern, and constantly integrating and developing. The Journalists’ Guild vividly combines freelance groups with charitable groups, giving full play to the advantages of journalists to every aspect of charitable activities, and the charitable activities are carried out with strong group characteristics. The effectiveness of charitable activities is a symptom of the social effect of charitable activities, but also the ultimate goal of the development of their activities. The Hong Kong Press Club carried out a large number of charitable activities during the period of the All-out War,which not only provided relief to Hong Kong refugees, supported the war effort, and created a charitable atmosphere, but also provided a social platform for the social image of journalists, improved the social status of journalists, and promoted the professional development of journalism in Hong Kong.In general, the philanthropic activities of the Hong Kong Press Club show us a sample of journalists’ participation in philanthropic activities.Unlike other social organizations, journalists’ associations have the advantage of being able to participate in all aspects of philanthropic activities and make a deeper impact. The balance between "form" and "righteousness",the combination of "nurturing" and "teaching",and the supervision of charitable activities are all worthy of our attention. The balance between "form" and "righteousness",the combination of "nurturing" and "teaching",and the supervision of charitable activities all deserve further consideration.
