A Historical Survey Of The Newspaper Reading Party In The Late Qing Dynasty And The Early Republic Of China(1898-1935)

The newspaper reading party,as the name suggests,is a public reading place for the general public,with dual attributes of enlightenment and public welfare.After the Sino Japanese War,the attention of the intellectual class shifted from “opening up the wisdom of gentry” to “enlightening the wisdom of the people”.In order to open up a knowledge channel to the lower class,with the joint advocacy of official and civil forces,the newspaper reading party,as an important enlightenment activity in late Qing society,began to carry out nationwide.This study adopts the method of literature analysis,and by excavating various newspapers and literature materials,it presents a relatively complete background,organizational management,preparation,and social impact of the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China newspaper reading agencies.From 1898 to 1911,the Late Qing Newspaper Reading Society,with the mission of “enlightening the people’s wisdom and opening up the atmosphere”,played an important role in guiding the reading atmosphere,promoting revolutionary ideas,and promoting the development of social education.From1912 to 1935,the newspaper reading agency was incorporated into the official social education system,and its reading and speech activities developed towards a more institutionalized and professional direction.It not only changed the reading world of young people,played a role in political discipline,but also promoted the establishment of modern libraries.The newspaper agencies embedded in urban and rural spaces,although they have been delicate and subtle in history,have had a profound impact.By salvaging and pasting these fragments,combined with many enlightenment practices such as vernacular newspapers,lectures,speeches,and opera improvements,a vivid and vivid image of the late Qing and early Republic of China’s social enlightenment group can be reconstructed.The various social mobilization strategies adopted by the newspapers in the late Qing and early Republic of China were also inherited by later mass movements,providing effective experience and wisdom.
