Science and democracy were the two banners guiding national salvation and development in the Republic of China.After the First Sino-Japanese War,a group of intellectuals who had received traditional education changed their vision and took science as a good strategy to save the country and devoted themselves to the enlightenment of science dissemination.In this period,a group of intellectuals with foresight of the country’s perilous situation became the main body of scientific communication,which spread from scientific knowledge,together with scientific traditions,scientific ideas,etc.,i.e.,through their own strategies or routes,i.e.,by translating foreign newspapers,writing their own articles,and conducting scientific education.The path of "Chinese-ization of science" was advanced.On this basis,many magazines and newspapers emerged to enlighten the public and introduce science,and "the Eastern Miscellany",as the most influential and longest-running comprehensive magazine in the history of modern periodicals in China,contains scientific and technological content that is also an important issue in the dissemination of science in the modern press.Among them,the scientific communication in the period when Du Yaquan was the editor is the most characteristic and representative.Therefore,it is important to focus on the scientific content of the magazine "the Eastern Miscellany" in this period.Starting from the introduction and spread of the concept of "science" in modern times,this paper compares the origins,purpose and development of the Eastern Miscellany in the context of the early Republic of China,focuses on the content and characteristics of scientific communication in the Eastern Miscellany during the period of Du Yaquan,and explores the role played by the press in modern scientific communication.This paper consists of the following parts: In the first chapter,the background and origin of "the Eastern Miscellany" and scientific communication are introduced,and the insistence and dissemination of science in "the Eastern Miscellany" was in line with the trend of the times under the realistic demand of salvation and survival at the beginning of the Civil War.The second chapter introduces Du Yaquan’s ideas on science communication.During Du Yaquan’s editorship,his rich scientific practice and advanced ideas on science communication had a profound impact on the scientific communication of the Eastern Miscellany.Chapter 3 compares and analyzes the scientific communication content of the Eastern Miscellany during the period of Du Yaquan,and finds that there were 537 articles related to scientific communication in the Eastern Miscellany during the period of Du Yaquan’s editorship,showing an overall increasing trend in the number of articles;in terms of content classification,it includes various disciplines such as biology,physics and chemistry,physiology and medicine,astronomy and geography,religion,sociology,philosophy,showing the characteristics of both natural sciences and humanities and social sciences.In terms of content classification,it contains a variety of disciplines such as biology,physics and chemistry,physiology and geography,astronomy and geography,religion,sociology,philosophy,etc.,showing the characteristics of both natural sciences and humanities and social sciences.The fourth chapter describes the following characteristics of science communication in the Eastern Miscellany under the presidency of Du Yaquan: firstly,there were many disciplines and the integration of natural and social sciences;secondly,it pointed to reality and served politics;finally,it had a moderate cultural reformist color.The fifth chapter describes the far-reaching significance of the scientific communication of the the Eastern Miscellany in this period: it made scientific awareness common sense and daily,and gradually added scientific concepts to the mindset of readers and audiences;the scientific spirit of active persistence and practical efforts presented in it provided a spiritual wealth worth inheriting and preserving for future generations,and provided a model for us to learn the strengths of its ideas and feel the light of its wisdom.During the nine years Du Yaquan served as editor of the Eastern Miscellany,he played an irreplaceable role in the dissemination of science in the Eastern Miscellany,and his diversified scientific background and gentle and progressive personal style had an impact on the dissemination of the newspaper.On the one hand,it inherited the rigorous and meticulous spirit of Du Yaquan’s science,and introduced the contents of various disciplines in a detailed and all-embracing manner,while on the other hand,it retained the usual open and moderate temperament of the Eastern Miscellany,contributing to the opening up of the people’s wisdom,the rational view of the achievements of science and civilization,and the dissemination of science.
