Cooperative English Translation Of Chinese Classics From The Perspective Of Plural Complementarism Of Translation Standards

A Critical Biography of Yan Ying(Yan Ying Ping Zhuan)is the most detailed study of Yan Ying,and a carefully crafted academic work by Professor Zhan Huajun with huge examination and analysis of numerous references from more than 40 volumes of ancient records,yet without English translation version.It deserves to be a model subject for the practice and research into Chinese classics translation.In view of the cites from various classics in the original and the co-translation mode,in order to select translation strategies and methods with Chinese characteristics,the author chooses Plural Complementarism of Translation Standards Theory as research guidance.As a self-contained translation theory,it is based on traditional Chinese culture and is a holographic three-dimensional view with Chinese characteristics.The author uses the comparative and descriptive research methods to analyse cooperative translation standards of Chinese classics,innovation mode and translation approaches.Through an in-depth understanding of traditional culture and the context of the original text,taking the specific translation problem as the guide,under the guidance of three major theoretical elements—best approximation of absolute standards,objective existence of plural standards,and practical application of complementary standards,the author selects the translation strategies and methods that best approximate the original text: complementarity of convention-related translation strategies,pluralism of language-related translation strategies,approximate absolute standard of second-time translation methods,cohesion and coherence within discourse,and construction of intertextuality and comprehension system.The study shows that in order to select translation strategies and methods aiming at Chinese characteristics,there exists objectively specific pluralist standards with complementarity under the absolute criterion in convention-related translation,English translation after the comprehension of the classic texts,and basic language problems,which is of practical significance and application.
