| Throughout the history of art, both Eastern and Western, flatness has been one of the fundamental expressive characteristics of their art.Primitive frescoes, medieval painting,Oriental art and Western modernist painting are all characterised by flatness,a flatness that is not primarily expressive in the sense of imitating nature, using simplified forms and flat, decorative colours as a form of expression. It exists independently of the expressions of classical art.The expression of graphic language varies from country to country and from one historical period to another, each with a distinctive flavour of its own culture, such as Egyptian tomb paintings, medieval stained glass paintings and Chinese cave paintings. This paper analyses and demonstrates the representation of graphic language in art history and its use in my own creative process through three chapters. The first chapter describes the origins and context of the flatness in Eastern and Western cultures throughout history and the different cultural characteristics that have been expressed by different regions. The second chapter further analyses the characteristics and expressions of graphic language, supported by artists with graphic characteristics in art history. The third chapter is devoted to the use of graphic language in my work and my perceptions in relation to my own specific works. The final section attempts to explore my own path in the complexities of contemporary painting. |
