| Fran(?)ois Mauriac(1885—1970),a famous French writer of the 20 th century, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1952 for his "spiritual insight and artistic passion in portraying in depth the drama of human life".As a writer with a strong sense of helping the world,Moriak’s novel about the tragedy of marriage exposes the disease of bourgeois civilization, reveals the spiritual desolation of modern man,and points out the way to a bright redemption. This paper takes the marital tragedies in Fran(?)ois Mauriac’s novels written in the1920 s and 1930 s as the object of study, analyzes the forms of marital tragedies in his novels, sorts out the causes of marital tragedies, unearths the deeper meanings reflected in marital tragedies, and finally rethinks his works from the perspective of marital tragedies in Mauriac’s novels. The first chapter,"The Presentation of Marriage Tragedy in Mauriac’s Writing,"focuses on "The Beginning of Tragedy," "The Development of Tragedy," and "The End of Tragedy. The first chapter,"The Presentation of Marriage Tragedy in Mauriac’s Writings,"explores three stages of development: the beginning, the development, and the end.The second chapter,"An Analysis of the Causes of Marriage Tragedy in Mauriac’s Novels," examines the causes of marriage tragedy in Mauriac’s novels at the level of the writer’s creativity, the personal level of the characters in the novels, and the social and contemporary levels. The third chapter,"The Deeper Implications of the Marriage Tragedy in Mauriac’s Writings" compares the marriage tragedies in Mauriac’s novels from reflections on the human condition to the spiritual condition of the civilization of the whole era.For one thing,Mauriac’s novel focuses on the widespread social problems closely related to human existence in the form of marriage tragedy,re-examining the relationship between the sexes in marriage, calling for the individual value of self-existence in marriage, and finally bringing people back to warmth, emotional belonging and spiritual comfort in the desert of love.Secondly,Mauriac shows the spiritual predicament of modern people by depicting the dissolution of love between husband and wife, relatives and friends, the crisis of self-identity and the narrowing of self-rights in bourgeois society.Third,in his novel,Mauriac reveals the shortcomings of modern Western civilization from the spiritual aspects of man, society and civilization, and shows his concern and reflection on such issues as bourgeois civilization and Christian faith. The fourth chapter,"Rethinking the Creation of Mauriac’s Marriage Tragedy Novel," reconsiders the value of Mauriac’s creation in terms of its theme, content, and ideology.First, the realistic themes of "love","Christianity","desire and morality" displayed in Mauriac’s novels have enduring value. In addition,Mauriac’s questioning of faith and old morality in his novels has shaken the original spiritual ideal world, which has inspiration and value for contemporary Chinese literature.Secondly,on the basis of the current situation of literary creation in the twentieth century and the questioning of Mauriac’s creation by later generations, the novel’s content and creative techniques are again reflected upon. Finally,an analysis of the pros and cons of the ways to resolve the human spiritual crisis proposed by Mauriac in the novel is presented. In short,Mauriac,as the last traditional flower of twentieth-century realist writing, deeply explored the illness of the bourgeoisie of the 1920 s and 1930 s through the creation of marital tragedy novels, and explored the path to salvation. |
