Under the advocacy and impetus of Zhao Mengfu, the leader of the calligraphic world,Yuan calligraphy embarked on a path of comprehensive "restoration".Zhao Mengfu’s calligraphy had a significant impact on the Yuan,Ming and Qing dynasties.Among them,Zhang Yu and Yu He,as disciples of Zhao Mengfu, were deeply influenced by his idea of "restoration" of calligraphy. As outstanding representatives of the Zhao school of calligraphers, the calligraphic styles of Zhang Yu and Yu He differ greatly, and for this reason,a comprehensive comparison of their calligraphy is of specific academic value and research significance. This paper begins by sorting out the backgrounds and biographical experiences of Zhang Yu and Yu He,clarifying their respective lineages of mastery, and conducting a detailed examination of their interactions with each other.Next,we analyze Zhang Yu’s and Yu He’s respective calligraphic thoughts and aesthetic interests, and then compare and analyze their calligraphic styles and artistic expressions. Finally, the calligraphic heritage of Zhang Yu and Yu He in the Yuan Dynasty and their influence on later generations are reviewed, and the value and influence of their calligraphy are compared in depth, thus highlighting the value of Zhang Yu’s ability to explore his unique artistic personality without being confined to the teachings. In contrast,Zhang Yu is not confined to Zhao Mengfu’s teachings, but rather takes the teachings from the above, and transforms himself into a master of many teachers.Through a comparative analysis of the calligraphy of Zhang Yu and Yu He,the author has gained a deeper understanding of the proposition of mastering the ancient and innovating, and has been inspired by it,which is of great significance to the future practice and theoretical research of calligraphy.
