In the Northern Song Dynasty,Nie Chongyi compiled 20 volumes of the New Definition of the Three Rites and presented them to the Song Emperor in the second year of the Jianlong reign(961 AD).It was widely promoted and published throughout the country. It illustrates the mysteries of the three rites in the form of pictures and texts. This paper mainly analyzes the content of "music" in "Xinding Sanli Tu" engraved in Chunxi period of Song Dynasty(1175).These images were used in the later ritual diagrams and had a profound influence on the development of music in later times. The main text consists of three chapters. The first chapter begins with an overview of the development of ritual from the Qin Dynasty to the Northern Song Dynasty. Then,it compares the representative documents of the three rites from the pre-Qin to the Northern Song dynasties. Finally,Nie Chongyi’s "New Definition of the Three Rites" is selected as the object of study, and the background and characteristics of the book are analyzed in the context of the social environment of the time.In the second chapter,a multidisciplinary approach, including documentary analysis and music iconography, will be used to organize and analyze the musical contents of the Xin Ding San Li Tu.The ritualistic ideas and musical values embedded in the musical images will be explored.Chapter 3 analyzes the value and influence of the Xin Ding San Li Tu,exploring its value in three aspects: ritual, music, and culture. In addition, the value of its transmission to East Asian countries such as Japan and Korea will be analyzed,as well as its inspiration and influence on later ritual chart writings. This paper aims to provide a special perspective for the study of ancient music in the form of music iconography,to supplement the missing historical materials, and in this way to enrich the connotation of ancient Chinese music culture and deepen our study of ancient music history.
