With the aggravation of aging problem in China, more and more elderly people choose to live in elderly care institutions.Senile dementia,a common disease of the elderly with no specifics,is seriously endangering the health of older persons.Non-drug intervention and preventive treatment in the mild to moderate senile dementia period is a hot spot in this field. The environmental particularity of elderly care institutions can not make the course of Alzheimer’s patients slowed down, which will lead to adverse mental health issues. Therefore, this paper introduces Cognitive Stimulation Therapy(CST)for mild and moderate senile dementia in non-drug treatment according to the characteristics of elderly care institutions,to explore the effectiveness and feasibility of CST for patients with mild and moderate senile dementia in elderly care institutions, and exploring the influence and sustained effect of CST on cognitive ability and mental health status of patients with mild and moderate senile dementia in elderly care institutions, and to provide reference for elderly care institutions in planning the interval of CST.A total of 48 patients diagnosed as mild and moderate senile dementia by an elderly care institution in Tianjin with corresponding inclusion criteria were selected as the study subjects. They were randomly divided into experimental group(aged 78.38±6.35)and control group(aged76.54±7.16)with 24 subjects in each. Both groups has received routine care and participated in daily activities in the hospital.Mini-Mental Status Examination(MMSE),Self-Rating Anxiety Scale(SAS),Geriatric Depression Scale(GDS)and Geriatric Mental Health Scale data were collected from both groups of patients before,after,3 weeks after and 5 weeks after the intervention to evaluate and analysis the effect of CST on cognitive ability and mental health toward patients with mild and moderate senile dementia in elderly care institutions. The result found that 1.the cognitive ability, anxiety and depression state and mental health level of elderly patients with mild and moderate senile dementia in elderly care institutions were improved after CST with statistically significant compared with preintervention.2.The effect of CST on cognitive ability, anxiety and depression state, and mental health level of elderly patients with mild and moderate senile dementia in elderly care institutions can last for at least 3 weeks after the end of treatment. Conclusion: The implementation of CST for patients with mild and moderate senile dementia in elderly care institutions is feasible, safe and effective, there were definite improvements on improving patients’ cognitive ability and mental health status, and it can be promoted the use in elderly care institutions. The effect of CST on cognitive ability and mental health improvement in patients with mild and moderate senile dementia in elderly care institutions can be maintained for at least 3 weeks after the end of treatment.
