A Report On E-C Translation Of Coal 2020

This Report on English-Chinese translation is based on the first three parts of Coal 2020,which was published by the International Energy Agency(IEA)on December 18,2020.Coal 2020 introduces recent global and regional trends in coal demand,supply and trade,and an outlook to2025.With the assistance of Wordfast,a CAT tool,the source text is first translated by Deep L,and machine translation post-editing(MTPE)is adopted for this practice.With many terms,passive voice sentences and long sentences,the source text belongs to English for Science and Technology(EST),which is characterized by rigorous logic,formal and precise language.Due to the difficulties in the translation of V-ing non-finite clauses and long sentences,the Translator makes an analysis of proper cases to through the use of corresponding techniques.This Report is divided into four chapters.Chapter one introduces the task description,text features,translation requirements and report structure.Chapter two describes the translation process,which includes pre-translation,during-translation and post-translation.Machine translation and MTPE are performed during the translation,playing a key role in quality assurance of the translation.Chapter three,case analysis,is the most important chapter in this Report.With the guidance of the theory about clause complex,the Translator elaborates the translation of V-ing non-finite clauses.Moreover,the Translator makes an analysis of some long sentences.The Translator tries to split and translate long sentences with a complex structure,and uses the embedding method to translate long sentences which are modified by a short post-modifier.Chapter four is the conclusion,concluding the Translator’s gains,this Reporter’s limitations,suggestions for EST translation.Through this translation task,the Translator has got further understanding of EST characteristics,and the clause complex theory,which is used as a guide for this translation practice.The Translator has got a new understanding of the translation methods of V-ing non-finite clauses and long sentences.Although there are limitations in the analysis of these cases,this Report is instructive for the teaching and practice of EST translation.
