An Interpreting Report On The Crop Varieties Demonstration At International Conference On Food Loss And Waste 2021

Interpretation is a challenging and intense brainwork of effectiveness,independence,and on-site.It involves an extremely wide range of knowledge,requiring strain capacity to respond to emergencies on the spot.On September 9,2021,the International Conference on Food Loss and Waste was held in Jinan,Shandong Province.The author was honored to be the interpreter for the delegates from 24 countries and regions visiting the National Crop Variety Demonstration Center on the first day of the conference.The task involved simultaneous interpretation without any notes and consecutive interpretation,and the main duty was to guide domestic and foreign officials to visit the demonstration center while introducing the growth of various crops and assisting foreign guests in communicating with Chinese experts and officials.In this practice,the tight schedule and heavy tasks brought great challenges to the author,mainly including the aspects of Listening,Production,Memory,and Coordination.Based on this interpreting task,this practice report aims to help solve the problems often encountered in performing interpretation tasks with reference to Daniel Gile’s the Effort Models:1)how to quickly prepare for interpreting tasks in unfamiliar fields and memorize a large amount of information,2)how to quickly adjust physical and mental state and reasonably allocate energy in the process of heavy interpretation work.This report focuses on the coping strategies to the problems encountered,touching upon preparations for unfamiliar professional knowledge,skills to deal with local accents,psychological stress adjustment,energy maintenance,and attention allocation.These corresponding strategies mainly include extending extra-linguistic knowledge and knowledge for the language,making adjustments according to the audience acceptancy,avoiding slip of tongue and ambiguous expressions through self-monitoring,simplifying the language,building muscle memory,and making hand cards.Enlightenments can be drawn from this practice that interpreters have to master professional background knowledge,flexibly apply semantic deconstruction and language conversion skills,and mobilize ears,eyes,hands,brain,and mouth at the same time to be efficient,accurate,faithful,and flexible to convey the information.To achieve this,the Effort Models alone are far from enough.To become professional interpreters,patience,perseverance and experience is also important.
