In recent years, with the development of internationalization of China’s higher education and the increase of international students, the translation task of foreign affairs in universities has become more important than ever before. To keep pace with the times, the topics and content of translation work are complex and diverse, and the quantity of translation tasks is huge.Translators not only have to pay attention to the political correctness and accuracy of information in translating for foreign affairs, but also take into account the subjective characteristics of international students as receptors. The specialty of the translation tasks deserves some research. This report is based on the author’s routine tasks, typical of her work at the Department of International Affairs.Usually, both Chinese and English languages are used in the service and management of international students, and the English version is mostly a translation of the Chinese version. Therefore, many tasks belong to Chinese-English translation. This report summarizes the difficulties in translating for the management of international student affairs according to the work practice, and points out some problems with translation. To address the problems, the author invokes the "functional equivalence" theory by Eugene Nida for guidance. In Nida’s opinion,"functional equivalence" should make the response of the readers of TL basically the same as that of the readers of SL.This principle is consistent with the goal of international student affairs management. In terms of text type, most of the textual materials to be translated for international student affairs management in universities are special-purpose texts of applied nature, which are different from purely academic or literary texts. So it is vital that the translator flexibly use translation methods to deal with complex language problems to achieve "functional equivalence".On the basis of fidelity to the original text, the message is conveyed in a way that is easier to be understood by readers. This report first gives a description of the task and then of the process. At the end of process description, the difficulties and challenges encountered in the translation practice are summarized, namely, political correctness, the particularity of the target language recipient, the negative influence from the mother tongue, and differences in culture and thinking mode.Based on Nida’s theory, this report provides some examples for a case analysis in those aspects. In addition, the different writing styles and rhetorical devices are discussed in order to summarize the common problems in translating for international student affairs. This report proposes some solutions for improving the quality of translation under the guidance of functional equivalence theory.
