Nanqiao Mechanic And The Economic Development Of Yunnan During The Anti-Japanese War

Yunnan has high mountains and deep valleys,inconvenient transportation,and the economic development level lags behind the developed areas for a long time.In the process of marketization and industrialization of modern economy,the problems of inconvenient transportation and lack of technical talents in Yunnan are more obviously prominent,which has become an important bottleneck restricting the economic development of Yunnan.In modern times,Britain,France and other countries stepped up their colonial aggression against China and absorbed the right of way in Yunnan,which showed the important role of transportation in economic development,intensified the spillover of profit power and seriously harmed the healthy development of Yunnan’s economy.People of all ethnic groups in Yunnan rose up and explored hard.Although they actively planned to build the Yunnan and Shu railway and the provincial roads,they took the step of independently promoting the modernization of transportation.But in the condition of extreme lack of technical personnel,progress is slow.During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression,the overseas Chinese in Nanyang promoted the spirit of patriotism and participated in supporting the domestic fight against the Japanese invasion of China through multiple channels.After the outbreak of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression in 1937,under the active advocacy of patriotic overseas Chinese leaders and the organization of the national government,overseas Chinese automobile drivers and skilled workers from Nanyang region(referred to as "Southern Chinese mechanic")returned to China from Nanyang countries and participated in the Anti-Japanese War with their own technological advantages.They came to Yunnan in batches and in organized ways.After receiving human resources training in Kunming,they mainly fought on the transportation route with the Burma Road as the core,with completing military transportation and supporting the wartime economy as the main tasks.Later,he has made outstanding contributions in the China-India Highway(Stilwell Highway),China-India oil pipeline,"Hump Route" and "Flying Tigers",and even participated in the battle of the Myanmar expeditionary force against Japan.After the victory of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression,those who stayed in Yunnan continued to make new contributions to the economic construction of Yunnan.Southern Chinese mechanics are mainly composed of young overseas Chinese in British Malaya,most of whom are drivers and skilled workers with mature experience.The technical characteristics and types of Nanqiao mechanics are rich and diverse,mainly represented by reliable and skilled driving technology and multilingual communication skills.The entry of nanqiao mechanics into Yunnan broke the bottleneck of the lack of human resources in modern Yunnan,not only strongly supported the external transportation of Yunnan during the Anti-Japanese War,but also made its own contribution to supporting the economic industrialization of Yunnan in wartime and promoting the leapfrog development of Yunnan economy.
