During the period of the Republic of China,as a new means of civilization communication and language expression, speech, together with schools and newspapers, was known as the "three sharp tools for spreading civilization".The relationship between schools, newspapers and new culture has been fully studied in the field of modern Chinese literature, but the speech, one of the "three sharp weapons",has been ignored.Among the "three sharp tools",the creation of speeches is closer to literature than schools and newspapers, but it has not attracted enough attention from the research circles of Chinese modern and contemporary literature. As one of the "three sharp tools to spread civilization",the university is not only the frontier of modern thought communication, but also an important place for speeches.During the period of the Republic of China,University Presidents were not only the subject of speeches, but also the subject of speech creation. Some presidents were also writers recorded in the annals of literature. The research on the speech of the president of the University of the Republic of China is to find a new academic growth point for the study of Chinese modern literature, and to break away from the shackles of narrow pure literature research and broaden the academic vision of Chinese modern literature research.Speech is a kind of special articles that the speaker publishes to the audience in public. This paper observes the creation of speeches from the perspective of great literary history, combined with the historical background and cultural context of the period of the Republic of China, through the study of the speeches of the president of the University of the Republic of China, explores the three themes(modern people, modern university and modern China)and their creative expression, and tries to reveal its cultural / literary history value and the discourse causes behind it.The first chapter discusses the imagination and expression of modern people in the speech of the president of the University of the Republic of China. The May 4th New Culture rediscovered "man" as the subject. At that time, most of the speeches of the president of the University echoed the "human literature" of the May 4th movement, expressing the call and pursuit of modern "human".First of all, this is reflected in the appellation of speeches and the expression of humility. In view of this expression phenomenon, this paper uses the comparative induction method in linguistic research to analyze how the speaker and the audience complete the equal imagination of "man" at the speech scene.Secondly, speeches are inseparable from the liberation of women’s "people".The speech focused on the fate of women, coincided with the "first ban on women" in the University, and men and women jointly obtained the right to listen to and deliver speeches on the university campus.Thirdly,in the face of the paradox of fate choice between fighting for individuals or fighting for the nation, the speech generally discussed reading and saving the country together, and discussed the possibility of breaking the gap between the two and pursuing diversity. The second chapter focuses on how the president of the University of the Republic of China spoke about the university itself, especially how the speaker imagined and expressed the "modern" University. One is how the author plans the layout of his speech to answer the questions of the significance of the existence of the University and the role of the president, especially the two propositions of whether a modern university is needed and what kind of university is a "modern" University. The second is to look at itself through others-learn from other countries’ universities to realize the establishment of the modernity of Chinese universities. The "speech of the Republic of China" is the discussion of the formation of the "community" in the whole campus.Because different presidents may have different views, the focus of this chapter is not to explore a "University" imagination that can cover all speeches and has universal significance, but to pay more attention to the emergence of modern university spirit in the dialogue environment of "hundred schools of thought contend" from the perspective of cultural reflection. The third chapter takes the speech of the premier Memorial week as an example to explore the imagination and expression of modern China in the speech of the president of the University of the Republic of China.Modern China is a large and complex proposition,so this paper chooses the premier’s memorial week speech to "see the big from the small".As a universal national commemorative activity at that time, the words of prime minister Memorial week itself had a political purpose. However,in the occurrence and acceptance of University speeches, the actual situation of speeches often deviates from the original political purpose and produces "variation".Through the analysis of this variation phenomenon and the causes of variation,as well as the interaction between speeches and other literary works, combined with the analysis of the text of speeches, this paper is committed to finding out the deep reasons behind the imaginative conflict of modern China and exploring the "modern China" imagined by people inside and outside the discourse of political discipline. This paper only makes a preliminary exploration on the text, expression theme, creative conception, literary expression and rhetoric of University Presidents’ speeches in the period of the Republic of China, and its richer and deeper connotation of the great literary history needs to be deeply explored.
