A Study On The Diversified Narrative Structure Of Character Documentaries

As an important genre of documentaries,character documentaries are deeply loved by the audience,which focuses on the "people" of different classes in society,and uses realistic techniques to fully display people’s living conditions and personality characteristics.Compared with ordinary films,the content is simple but the cultural function is extremely strong.How to make a character documentary have both aesthetic value and humanistic value is a problem that creators need to think about.Narrative structure is one of the main narrative means in films,which is directly related to the production of character documentaries.Starting from the narrative structure of character documentaries,the article uses the relevant theories of structuralist narratology and film aesthetics,selects typical works of similar themes,and takes the author’s graduation thesis "Jingcai Life" as a case study to explore its application in the creation of character documentaries.The graduation work "Jingcai Life" takes du Peng,a famous contemporary Peking opera artist,as the narrative core,and uses a diversified narrative structure to tell the story of what happened in the process of learning and inheriting Peking Opera,so as to show the excellent cultural heritage of the Chinese nation.This paper is divided into five parts,first of all,the introduction part explains the background and significance of the selected topic,the research status,and the research content and methods.The first chapter conceptually defines the character documentary and narrative structure;The second chapter analyzes the narrative structure of character documentaries from two levels,based on the narrative theory of structuralist narratologist Simon Chartman’s "story/discourse";The third chapter combines the author’s own creative practice and explains how the diversified narrative structure is applied and presented in the graduation work;The fourth chapter explores the theme expression and value construction of "Jingcai Life" under the diversified narrative structure.This paper combines theory and creative practice,focuses on the narrative research of character documentaries,provides new experience and ideas for the creation of narrative structure of the same type of documentary,and at the same time explores social and cultural values,establishes national cultural self-confidence,and constructs national identity by shaping the character image of a Peking Opera inheritor.
