A Report On E-C Translation Of The Global Food Economy:Battle For The Future Of Farming(Excerpts) Based On Adaptation Theory

This translation practice report,using the translation material excerpted from the Preface and Chapter 2 of The Global Food Economy: Battle for The Future of Farming,based on Jef.Verschueren’s Pragmatic Adaptation Theory,aims to explore the applicability of this theory guiding social science texts translation practice.This book belongs to social science texts,with standardized language and objective content,providing introductory materials for general readers.However,because the text contains professional knowledge and flexible expressions,there are some challenges in the translation process.With this in sight,this report analyzes the specific translation cases from four perspectives: contextual(communicative and linguistic)correlates adaptability,structural(lexical and syntactic)objects adaptability,dynamics of adaptability,and salience of translators’ awareness.In securing the accuracy of TT,the translator adjusts the translation according to the language variability,negotiability,and adaptability,to improve the readability of the TT and adapt to the cognition of the TT readers.This report reaches the conclusion that the Adaptation Theory can effectively guide the translation of social science texts,as the cases shown in this report.Taking dynamic choice-making and the salience of translators’ awareness in the translation process into consideration can generate a professional,faithful,and easy-tounderstand TT.
