Before and after the founding of new China, many painters have created oil paintings with ethnic minority themes, but due to the limitations of some objective conditions, the ethnic minorities concerned by painters are several representative ethnic groups in Western China. With the development of the times, ethnic minorities in Central China have slowly entered the public’s vision, bringing new creative inspiration and direction to various artists. The Wuling mountain area where Tujia people live has beautiful scenery and relatively complete ethnic characteristics. Therefore, some excellent works of art have been created. This paper uses the methods of literature research, field investigation and image research to collect and summarize the history, culture and life of Tujia ethnic group, and uses the work analysis method to analyze the ethnic minority oil paintings before the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The contemporary Tujia theme oil paintings are studied and summarized from the aspects of composition, color and significance.Tujia theme oil painting creation learns from and draws lessons from minority and local oil paintings, and explores through the aspects of content, composition, modeling, color, significance and so on.There are 6 Tujia series oil paintings, which are the inheritance and development of Tujia culture, show the life of Tujia people, and deeply study the cultural connotation and practical significance behind it.The combination of oil painting and Tujia culture not only completes the graduation creation, but also forms its own artistic characteristics in the creation process, but also carries forward the traditional culture of the ethnic group and contributes a little to the protection and inheritance of the ethnic culture.
