development of modern nation-states.The French Revolution promoted the process of Jewish emancipation, and France became the first country in Europe to grant Jewish citizenship. With Napoleon’s foreign conquests and the spread of revolutionary ideas, the Jews of Western Europe were liberated one after another.Among the French colonies,Algerian Jews are the only colonial Jews granted citizenship by France.Their acquisition of citizenship is relatively late and has been repeated due to changes in the political situation.Issues and discussions about their citizenship run through almost the entire French colonial rule. Before the French colonized Algeria, the Jews had already made considerable progress in this land and formed a relatively complete Jewish community.Since the French conquest of Algeria, the French government has taken some measures to naturalize the Algerian Jews, but due to the conflict between Jewish tradition and French culture, the conflict between Jewish law and French law, etc.,the results are not significant.France enacted in 1870 the Cr(?)mieux Decree, the mandatory mass naturalization of Algerian Jews collectively as French citizens. This was a pivotal turning point in the history of Algerian Jews and an important step for France to advance its policy of colonization(indigenization)in Algeria. The decree transformed Algerian Jews from colonial subjects to French citizens,a change in status that more closely linked Algerian Jews to French and French Jewish historical narratives.Just as Jews across Europe stood at the crossroads of emancipation, assimilation and loyalty to whom during this period,Algerian Jews who were granted citizenship were also faced with seeking to integrate into Algerian society, actively accept French culture, demonstrate patriotism, and realize religious and community reforms.many opportunities and challenges. For the Algerian Jewish community living in the unique cultural and social context of North Africa, obtaining citizenship expanded their political and social participation, while also highlighting the inner contradictions and entanglements they have had in their integration into mainstream society. The acquisition of citizenship by Algerian Jews is in conflict with the pursuit of their rights by other religions and ethnic groups.Since the identity of indigenous peoples such as Arabs and Berbers was not mentioned in the Cr(?)mieux Decree, the relationship between Algerian Jews and them gradually became alienated. After the acquisition of citizenship by Jews, their economic and political status was greatly improved, resulting in occasional and inflammatory violence, and anti-Semitism appeared in many different forms in the colonies. As the main arena of civil society in the colonial era, municipal governments were also one of the most active places for anti-Semites.Citizenship of Algerian Jews has always been at odds with local residents and immigrants, competing not only with Arabs and Berbers, but also with European settlers and French immigrants. On the one hand,anti-Semitism in the colonies accelerated the assimilation of Jews, and they used this to prove that they were qualified French citizens. On the other hand,Jews also actively responded to anti-Semitism to defend their right to exist.A major blow to the civil rights of Algerian Jews occurred in 1940.Influenced by Nazi policies, the Vichy government repealed the Cr(?)mieux Decree,Most Jews have been deprived of their civil rights.Faced with the anti-Semitic policies of the Vichy government,Algerian Jews also fought unsuccessfully to defend their civil rights. In October1943,France announced the restoration of Jewish citizenship. When the Jews had not yet emerged from the shadow of anti-Semitic persecution,Algeria’s war of independence caused a serious crisis in Jewish identity and patriotism. After Algeria’s independence,The deprivation of non-Muslim citizenship after Algeria’s independence led to a large number of Jewish immigrants.Citizenship brings both positive changes and challenges to Algerian Jews.Algerian Jews did not experience the violent anti-Semitism of Europe,so they were not as eager for emancipation and civil rights as European Jews. But like European Jews,Algerian Jews welcome citizenship and are committed to political and social integration. However, after being granted citizenship,Algerian Jews encountered a more serious problem of anti-Semitism than before. They chose to accept French culture to defend their civil rights, but were envied and attacked by groups such as Arabs and Berbers.Externally,French colonization and regime change influenced the colonial policy.Internally, the uniqueness of Algerian society also influenced the liberation of Jews to some extent.Jews in western Europe face different living environments: Jews here lived in the Islamic world for a long time, and it wasn’t until the 19 th century that French colonization broke the original social structure that Jews gradually entered the modern society. The Jews in western Europe are mostly in the Christian world.Influenced by many factors, the liberation road of Algerian Jews is repeated and tortuous. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | France, Algerian Jews, Citizenship, Cr(?)mieux Decree, Antisemitism | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
