Research On The Global Competence Educational Content In English Textbooks Of The People’s Education Press For Junior High School

The trend of internationalization of our education is becoming more obvious because of the acceleration of the trend of economic globalization.The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD)has added an assessment of global competence to its Programme for International Student Assessment(PISA)in 2018,and the concept of “global competence” has gradually entered the public consciousness.Global competence is the specialized competence that students need to face and overcome the challenges that happen under the background of globalization,and it is very important for students’ all round development nowadays.Cultivating students’ global competence is a major trend of international talent training as well as a significant part of foreign language education-reform at home.English is the first foreign language in our country,so it is a vital material of teachers’ classroom teaching.Besides,it also serves as the crucial carrier for students to learn knowledge and improve their ability.Therefore the analysis of the global competence educational content’s composition and presentation in the English textbooks has become the essential part of the English course in cultivating students’ global competence.This thesis is intend to study junior high school English textbooks of the People’s Education Press in detail,and mainly adopt three research methods: content analysis method,literature analysis method and deep interview method.Based on the content domain framework of global competence cognitive test(the framework of global competence educational content),and with the theoretical researches of the relationship between language and culture,globalization and stages of cognitive development,then the study extracts related content in the textbooks and explores the condition and the characteristic of the composition and presentation of the related content in the textbooks.Textbooks always serve for teaching.Whether we can make full use of the global competence educational content in the English textbooks and give full play to the textbooks’ educational function for cultivating students’ global competence is closely related to teaching practices in classroom.So the thesis also explores the teaching practice on the global competence educational content in the textbooks on the basis of previous content analysis.First of all,in terms of the composition of the global competence educational content in junior high school English textbooks of the People’s Education Press,the proportion of all primary and secondary categories of global competence educational content in the textbooks,the proportion of elements in the primary categories and the relationship between content quantity and grades are detailed analyzed and then several conclusions can be drawn:(1)the textbooks have abundant global competence educational content and cover all kinds of educational content;(2)the content related to “cultural and cross-cultural relations” in the textbooks become the most concerned content;(3)the current stage of the composition of global competence educational content is not obvious.Secondly,in terms of the presentation of the global competence educational content in the junior high school English textbooks of the People’s Education Press,the author analyzes the related content in the textbook from two aspects.One aspect is overall presentation analysis,which involves the supporting illustrations that related to global competence educational content,the content’s multidisciplinary characteristics and mentioned countries in the content.The other aspect is thematic presentation analysis,which involves four kinds of themes.It is concluded that the presentation of global competence educational content in the textbook are characterized by richness,vividness and properly detailed and concise but lack of breadth and depth to a certain extent.Finally,this study survey the current situation of teaching practice on global competence educational content in the textbooks from the following aspects: teachers’ views and degree of recognition on global competence;teachers’ understanding of global competence educational content in the textbooks;concrete teaching practices adopted by teachers in global competence education.And the existing problems of teaching practice in global competence education can be found:(1)the authentic classroom: the actual teaching aims are divorced from global competence education;(2)teaching idea: teachers ignore the function of global competence education of English;(3)teaching content: global competence educational content is limited;(4)teaching method: teachers mainly adopt the single and passive method of lecture.The thesis end with putting forward the corresponding suggestions from teaching orientation:(1)clear teaching orientation and set up correct values of English education;(2)change the teaching concept and improve teachers’ global competence;(3)deepen the teaching content and promote the input quality of global competence educational content;(4)enrich teaching method and cultivate students’ global competence pointedly.No matter from the perspective of the major background of global education or the deepening basic education curriculum reform,the content deconstruction of global competence and relevant practical research on English textbooks will be a continuous hot spot,which needs more researchers do more and deeper research to pursue the progress of students’ global competence at home and achieve a higher goal of promoting reform of global competence education in foreign language education.
