Since the first Confucius Institute in Madagascar was established at the University of Antananarivo in 2008,the number of Malagasy Chinese learners has been increasing.In terms of the current status of research,although the number of research results on Chinese language learning in Madagascar has gradually increased,there are relatively few studies on studying learning motivation,especially those conducted on specific cases.In order to fill this gap,the author,who is from Madagascar and used to be a student of Confucius Institute at Antananarivo University,takes the students of Confucius Institute at Antananarivo University as an example to study the motivation of Malagasy students in learning Chinese,and on this basis,puts forward relevant strategies and suggestions to stimulate students to learn Chinese.On this basis,we propose strategies and suggestions to stimulate students’ motivation to learn Chinese,in order to contribute to the study on the improvement of Chinese language teaching and learning motivation of Malagasy students..This paper focuses on analyzing the factors that affect the motivation of Chinese learners at the Confucius Institute of Antananarivo University,based on D?rnyei,Gardner and Lambert’s learning motivation theory.Using documentary research method and questionnaire survey method,students from first to third year and weekend classes of this Confucius Institute were surveyed;the findings were analyzed in terms of five types of learning motivation: internal motivation,external motivation,integration motivation,instrumental motivation and achievement motivation,and also data were analyzed in terms of different factors,including four main factors: students’ gender,age,length of study and Chinese language level;some Students and teachers were selected for interviews and questionnaires,and finally,strategies and suggestions for motivating students to learn Chinese were proposed.
