Reducing the homework is an important goal of reducing the burden on students,but the fact about homework assignments is not completely so.The common desire to reduce the burden and increase the efficiency calls for teachers to assign homework effectively.Therefore,based on the Notice of the General Office of the Ministry of Education to strengthen the management of homework in compulsory education schools and the Opinions to ease the burden of excessive homework and off-campus tutoring for students undergoing compulsory education,this thesis aims to find the standards of checking the effectiveness of English homework assignments in junior high school,investigate the problems based on the standards,analyze the causes and give corresponding optimization strategies and cases.This research adopts quantitative,qualitative and philosophical methods.Firstly,a junior high school in Chongqing was chosen,and questionnaires were distributed to 325 students in Grade 7 and 8 of this school.Secondly,a sample of 8 students and 6 English teachers in Grade 7 and 8 of the school were interviewed.Thirdly,a class of Grade 7 was chosen as the observation subject,and its English homework assignments were continuously tracked for 51 days with the homework record schedule,further supporting and verifying result analysis of the questionnaire.Based on literature,the thesis proposes standards of checking the effectiveness of English homework assignments: moderateness of homework quantity,typicality of English homework quality,student-orientation of homework subjects,diversity of homework types,openness of homework resources,and multidimensionality of homework functions.Based on them,it is found that junior high school English teachers still have problems about their effectiveness of assigning homework: instability of the quantity,poorness of the quality,little attention paid to students’ participation,fixation of the types,scarcity of the resources and one-dimension of the function.In this regard,this thesis proposes to keep the total amount of homework assignments,optimize the quality of homework assignments,emphasize students’ subjectivity within homework assignments,enrich the types of homework assignments,diversify the resources involved in homework assignments and renew views of function of homework assignments,for improving the effectiveness of English homework assignments in junior high school.
