As an essential part of English teaching, reading plays a pivotal role in the study of English, which can broaden the vocabulary of students and improve their English writing ability,as well as promote their interest in learning English. In 2015,Wang Qiang and Aona Rentuya presented that English reading literacy includes reading ability and character.English reading literacy has also received much attention as a result.Scholars have also been moving the attention from reading ability to reading literacy. To understand the current situation of English reading literacy among junior high school students, this study investigated the current situation of middle school students’ English reading literacy with reference to the theoretical framework of English reading literacy development goals proposed by Wang Qiang(Wang Qiang,2017),taking X middle school in Zhoukou City as an example, trying to answer the following three questions:(1)What is the current status of junior high school students’ English reading literacy?(2)What are the factors that affect junior high school students’ development of English reading?(3)What are the cultivation strategies for junior high school students’ English reading literacy? In order to solve the above research problems,303 students and 8 English teachers from X junior high school in Zhoukou City were selected as the research subjects in this study.Using the questionnaire survey method and interview method, this research conducted a comprehensive analysis of the current situation of English reading literacy among junior high school students, analyzed in depth the factors that influence the development of English reading literacy among middle school students, and explored teaching strategies to effectively cultivate junior high school students’ English reading literacy. The following are the primary findings of this study: First of all,The development of Students’ English reading literacy is uneven in all dimensions, the development of students’ reading comprehension, language knowledge and decoding ability is relatively good, but the development of students’ cultural consciousness is not balanced.Students’ reading character showed a low level of development,in which students’ reading habits were poorly developed, especially in terms of the frequency and total amount of reading, which did not meet the development goals that second year middle school students should achieve.Students’ reading attitudes and reading interests are at the lower level.Secondly, the factors that influenced middle school students’ development of English reading literacy mainly include teachers’ factors and students’ factors. For teachers, they lack of understanding of theories related to English literacy and do not pay timely attention to the frontiers or dynamics of English reading literacy, and under the pressure of exam-oriented education, teachers do not pay attention to the development of students’ reading character, and and put more effort on explaining the basic structure of words and phrases to develop students’ reading ability. For students, they lack reading interest and attitude, most students are not interested in participating in activities related to reading organized by teachers, and their reading quantity and frequency are not enough.Based on this, this study can help English teachers to understand the current situation of English reading literacy and its cultivation,so that teachers can realize the importance of English reading literacy from the ideological point of view, and thus enhance the cultivation of English reading literacy. This study also proposes specific teaching strategies for English reading teaching and offers new approaches for teachers to improve students’ English reading literacy in the future, thus promoting the well-balanced development of middle school students’ English reading literacy, and then not only improving students’ reading ability but also their character.
