| Xi Jinping,General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China,pointed out that “culture is the soul of a nation and a country” in the report of the19 th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.Moreover,as the root and soul of the Chinese nation,the Chinese culture is the deep foundation for the cultural development of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era.High school is a crucial stage in the formation of students’ values,outlook on life and worldview,and teaching materials,the main means and tools for Chinese students and teachers,are an important part of the implementation of the English curriculum,playing a crucial role in the teaching of culture to students.According to the General Senior High School Curriculum Standards(2020),students should be able to acquire cultural knowledge,understand cultural connotations,take in cultural essence,form correct values,enhance cultural confidence,form good characters of self-esteem,confidence,and self-improvement,and develop skills for cross-cultural communication and the transmission of Chinese culture.Therefore,it is of great significance to explore the Chinese cultural content in the textbooks.Based on the requirements of the General Senior High School Curriculum Standards(2020)for Chinese cultural content and the compilation principles of textbooks,this study takes the PEP senior high school English textbook as the research object and uses the text analysis method as the research method to study the Chinese cultural content of the PEP senior high school English textbooks(2019 Edition).Firstly,on the macro level,this study combs and presents Chinese cultural contents in textbooks,analyzes the overall characteristics of Chinese cultural contents;secondly,on the micro level,it analyzes and evaluates Chinese cultural contents in textbooks from the perspectives of cultural structure,cultural ages and cultural presentation.This study aims to answer the following two questions:(1)What is the general distribution and characteristics of Chinese cultural content in PEP senior high school English textbooks?(2)What are the characteristics of Chinese cultural content in terms of the structure of culture,the times of culture,and the presentation of cultural content?This study finds that: firstly,on the whole,the distribution of Chinese cultural content in PEP senior high school English textbooks is relatively balanced,with both compulsory and optional textbooks covering Chinese cultural content,but specifically,in a particular textbook,the distribution of its Chinese cultural content in the units is uneven.Besides,the content of Chinese culture in the textbook also shows the characteristics of high relevance and emphasis on input.Secondly,in terms of cultural structure,the sorts of Chinese cultural content in PEP senior high school English textbooks are varied,but there is an imbalance of cultural types and a lack of deep culture;in terms of the characteristics of times of culture,contemporary and modern culture wins a landslide victory over traditional culture.Finally,the ways of presenting Chinese cultural content in PEP senior high school English textbooks are diverse and elastic,mainly by the combination of pictures and words.Based on the above findings,this study puts forward complementary strategies and suggestions for textbook editors and front-line English teachers.First of all,textbook writers are expected to pay more attention to improving the permeability and systematization of Chinese culture in textbooks,appropriately enhance the depth of Chinese cultural content,enrich Chinese traditional culture,and attach importance to language output when designing English learning activities for Chinese culture.Secondly,teachers are expected to fully understand the Chinese cultural content in English textbooks,improve their cultural sensitivity,and help students establish correct cultural concepts.Meanwhile,teachers are encouraged to attach importance to language input and output in teaching Chinese culture,make full use of multimedia and network technology,and constantly improve their cultural teaching skills. |
