| The Language of the Inuit mainly studies the Inuit from the perspectives of phonetics, semantics and grammar and it is a work of anthropological and ethnolinguistic research on Inuit,as well as a monograph describing geography, language, history, society and cultural space, which can help domestic readers better understand the history, current situation and future development of the Inuit language in the Arctic. This translation practice mainly studies the second chapter of the book.In the process of research, the author finds that nouns appear more frequently in the second chapter of the book and contain a lot of highly specialized information, which has caused trouble for the author both in semantic translation and structural analysis. There are many differences in the way of expression between Chinese and English, translation without the guidance of translation theory is prone to improper use of vocabulary, redundancy, translation repetition, unclear expression, and other problems. Moreover, this source text is an informative text, which should pay attention to the transmission of the information in the source language and the acceptance of the information by the domestic readers. Therefore, according to the language characteristics and content of the source text,Vermeer’s skopos theory is selected as the guiding theory of this translation practice. In the end, under the guidance of Vermeer’s skopos theory, the author studies the noun translation in The Language of the Inuit. The results show that there are four methods in the English-Chinese translation of nouns.First, literal translation can be used when the meaning of the source text can be expressed accurately and smoothly;Second, free translation can be used when the meaning of the source text cannot be accurately and smoothly expressed;Third, addition can be used when the sentence lacks elements in the literal translation;Fourth, conversion can be used when the translation is not in line with the expression habits of target language. The purpose of using different noun translation methods is to express the information of the source text with the most appropriate language and make the target text be accepted by the domestic readers.Through the research and summary of the Chinese translation of nouns in informative text, this report aims to provide reference for the translation practice of similar text, and also help relevant researchers deepen the regional and national research of countries and regions around the Arctic Ocean. |
