A Report On C-E Translation Of Drug Control In Contemporary Yunnan (Chapter6) From The Perspective Of Translation Variation Theory

Being adjacent to the Golden Triangle,one of the world’s main drug producers in the past,Yunnan is the forefront of the national anti-drug operation with a long-lasting challenge.Through the research and dissemination of the history of drug control in Yunnan,it is helpful for summarizing the historical experience of drug control in Yunnan for decades,providing valuable experience and reference for other provinces on the anti-drug work,and raising our awareness to make efforts to the best of our ability to resist drugs at the same time.The translation project is selected from the book of Drug Control in Contemporary Yunnan which was written by Niu Helan and published by Yunnan People’s Publishing House in 2012.The book gives a summary on the anti-drug operation in different stages in Yunnan since the founding of the People’s Republic of China,and describes the drug situation and the government’s anti-drug policy.The sixth chapter(about 23,071 words),which is translated by the translator,combines the informative function and vocative function to convey the information of drug control work in Yunnan to readers in concise and clear language.The translation and publication of the book will enable the English-speaking world to better understand the drug control situation,anti-drug measures,experiences and lessons in Yunnan,as well as the efforts and contributions of the Chinese people to the international drug control work.Five parts are included in this translation report,namely,an introduction to the translation project,the translation process,the theoretical framework,case studies and a conclusion.In the pre-translation stage,the main task was to repeatedly study and analyze the important information and language features of Chapter 6.The difficulties encountered by the translator in the process of translation mainly lie in the lack of professional terms,the splitting of long sentences with difficult structures and the unskilled usage for special expressions in Chinese.In order to improve the quality of initial translation,the translator borrowed books related to drug control work to increase the professional background knowledge and study English parallel texts.In the post-translation stage,the translator classified the translation problems and applied translation variation theory to guide report writing and case studies.In translation practice,the application of online translation tools increased the efficiency and accuracy of translation.And six methods in translation variation theory,namely,addition,deletion,edition,combination,adaptation and narration,were adopted to solve problems at the lexical,syntactic and paragraph levels.In the revision stage,English native speakers were invited to proofread some paragraphs based on self-proofreading by the translator.In the stage of report writing,the translator chose the translation variation theory to analyze the cases according to the translation problems.And the case study shows that translation variation theory gives the translator greater subjectivity and creativity to effectively improve the readability of the translation.Although there is still room for improvement in the final translation,the translator has accumulated valuable experience in the translation of this kind of text through this translation practice,for instance,how to search for background knowledge,how to choose the guiding theory according to the type of the original text and so on.
