Bangasayusang originated in ancient India,flourished in China during the Southern and Northern Dynasties,and then spread to Japan.It had a profound influence on Japanese Buddhist art.The study of its origin and evolution,involving the cultural exchange on the Silk Road,is one of the important topics in the history of communication.For the current domestic research on Buddhist Bangasayusang statues,scholars tend to focus on the statues in a particular region or time interval,and the study materials mainly focus on carving statues.It not only lacks the overall perspective of the whole Chinese Buddhist circle,but also has many shortcomings in the study of trans-regional art history.This paper combines Bangasayusang imagery materials from Gandhara,China to the Korean Peninsula and Japan.Basing on the interpretation of historical documents and image analysis,researching the origin,evolution and propagation of Bangasayusang statues.This paper focuses on the evolution of artistic style and identity of Bangasayusang statues in the process of their eastward spread from central China to Japan.From the analysis of the changes in social ideology and the reasons for the changes in art history,this paper tries to reconstruct the path and evolution process of the eastward spread of the Bangasayu Bodhisattva.Taking into account the influence of Central Plains Buddhist art on Japan from the Southern and Northern Dynasties to the Sui and Tang Dynasties.The purpose is to compare and analyze The Bangasayusang statues of China and Japan from a broader perspective,and to research and explore the evolution of art.In gandhara,at first,Bangasayusang Buddha statues were used to depict the scene of Prince Siddhartha brooding under a tree.Later,it was widely applied to the images of Bodhisattvas and evil Kings in stories told by Buddhas.As late as the Southern and Northern Dynasties,Bangasayusang statues had spread eastward to China through two routes.The Bangasayusang statues were localized in the central plains,and the unique Buddhist Bangasayusang statues were developed,began to have symbolic meaning,specific to the performance of the two types of thinking prince and Maitreya Bodhisattva Bangasang.After the Southern and Northern Dynasties,the Bangasayusang statues spread to the Korean Peninsula and Japan.It has had a profound influence on the buddhist statues from Asuka to Nara period in Japan.The Japanese Buddhist Bangasayu statues can be divided into three stages: the Asuka Age,the Baifeng Age and the Nara Age.Different artistic characteristics and styles are presented in each stage,reflects the changes of cultural exchanges and beliefs.By summarizing the evolution law and characteristics of Japanese Bangasayusang art style,it reflects the influence of foreign culture as advanced culture on regional culture,and the localization of religion reflects the transformation of regional culture on foreign culture.At the same time,the belief and aesthetic spirit carried by The Bangasayusang statues also changes the aesthetic value orientation and aesthetic concept of Japanese society,reflects the profound influence of Chinese culture on Japan.
