Book engraving is the most extensive carrier of calligraphy dissemination.The official inscriptions of the Song Dynasty mainly used Ou characters,but in the Yuan Dynasty,Zhao Mengfu typeface were used,which reflected the status and influence of Zhao Mengfu in the Yuan Dynasty.Zhao style,with his beautiful,fluent calligraphy and efficient writing,especially Zhao Mengfu’s achievements in literature and calligraphy,replaced the Ou style and became the official carving of the Yuan Dynasty.Zhao style is mainly used in Zhejiang,Jiangxi,Jiangsu and Anhui areas,become the main engraving font,the official carving institutions are mainly Zhejiang province and local Confucianism and academy inscriptions;in addition,there are many family inscriptions,fang inscriptions and Buddhist inscriptions,also use Zhao calligraphy.Zhao style calligraphy engraving mainly using regular script,line script,running script three fonts for printing,beautiful and smooth font,shape and spirit,become in addition to calligraphy and authentic works and tablet inscriptions,another kind of the largest,the most extensive way of communication.Yuan Dynasty Zhao style characters engraved calligraphy,although after the literati imitation carving knife work has become inconsistent with the original calligraphy,however,generally embodies the aesthetic characteristics of zhao style character,zhao style spread not only for the Yuan dynasty and early Ming dynasty China’s influence,but also spread to Korea and Japan,and had an important influence on the inscriptions in Southeast Asia and East Asia.
