The Tan Family Calligraphy And The Yan Calligraphy Style In The Early Republic Of Chin

The Tan family was a calligraphy family in Chaling,Hunan during the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China.The first generation Tan Zhonglin started calligraphy for the Tan family in Chaling,and introduced the calligraphy style and thought of the emperor Weng Tonghe into the calligraphy education of the Tan family.The second generation Tan Yankai and Tan Zekai revived the family’s calligraphy career.Tan Yankai continued to promote the calligraphy development of the Tan family with his unique "Chongyan calligraphy view".The Tan family’s calligraphy achieved remarkable achievements in the calligraphy circle of the Republic of China.Even though the third generation Tan Shu and Tan Boyu were no longer calligraphy celebrities,they still made some contributions to the continuation and development of the Tan family’s calligraphy.After the fall of the Qing court,and since the Republic of China,the forces of revolutionaries from all over the world have come on stage,adding more unstable factors to the environment of the Republic of China.At this time,Shanghai’s calligraphy and painting market was developing and prosperous,and the concessions of various countries could provide political asylum,which attracted many calligraphers to live in Shanghai and provide self-sufficiency with vend books,including many "learning calligraphers".In 1914,when Tan Yankai was frustrated by Yuan,he had to be dismissed from Lixiang,and he and his younger brother Tan Zekai avoided chaos in Shanghai.In Shanghai,Tan Yankai met Li Ruiqing,a former friend,and quickly integrated with Li Ruiqing into Shanghai’s painting and calligraphy circle.Later,Zeng Xi also came to Shanghai from Hunan,and under Li Ruiqing’s suggestion,they both vend books in Shanghai together.The three friends often accompanied by banquets,forming a circle of calligraphy,connoisseurship and collection,which mainly focused on study and research,and took banquets as a spare part.From Tan Yankai’s social circle as a starting point,it is also possible to see the big from the small,and get a glimpse of the Yanshu fashion in Shanghai and even the entire Republic of China.
