One of the most important typefaces in Japan, the design of the Japanese Ming Dynasty style has evolved in response to technical, reading and aesthetic factors. This paper is an applied study of the Japanese Ming Dynasty style, based on its history and related typographic design.Firstly,it begins with the formation and evolution of the Ming style in China during the Ming dynasty, and its relevance to the art of printing. After the spread of ancient Chinese texts abroad, the Ming Dynasty style had a profound impact on the printing scripts of other countries in the Chinese cultural circle, especially in the Japanese Wagasa script, which was widely used.Subsequently, the combination of Western printing techniques and Eastern engraving techniques gave rise to the new Ming style, represented by the ’Meihua style’,which was further enhanced by the introduction of the electroplating method of making copper moulds for lead movable type, making the latter the most commonly used book printing type in modern times and influential to this day.The thesis then turns to an analysis of the design elements of the Japanese Ming dynasty style, where Japanese symbols and Japanese grammatical rules became increasingly sophisticated and the use of the kana system added new textual content and design specifications to the Japanese Ming dynasty style.Secondly, the focus of the essay turns to the representative Japanese Ming dynasty styles of each period, with case studies of outstanding and classic Japanese Ming dynasty styles such as the Hidei Ming dynasty style, the Kou dynasty style, the Matisse Ming dynasty style and the Chikushi Ming dynasty style, and an in-depth study of their innovative development in terms of both design and application,in conjunction with the technical and glyphological perspectives involved in their production. Finally, through the study of the Japanese Ming Dynasty style, the aesthetic differences between the Chinese and Japanese traditions are briefly discussed. On this basis, the design of the Japanese Ming dynasty style is compared with that of the Chinese Song orthography, and the strengths of Chinese design in Song orthography are sought. This is a summary of the dilemmas and opportunities for innovation in the latter’s current and future development, and the three perspectives of balance, legibility and ethnicity that emerge from the case study to improve design theoretical guidance for the innovative design of Song orthography.
