A E-C Translation Report On The Dead Are Arising:The Life Of Malcolm X(Excerpts) Under The Guidance Of Linguistic Adaptation Theory

This translation report is under the guidance of linguistic adaptation theory by Jef Verschuren.The source text of the translation task is Chapter 12,Hartford: The Dead Are Arising,excerpted from The Dead Are Arising: The Life of Malcolm X co-written by Les Payne and his daughter,Tamara Payne.In the translation task,the translator hopes to display character of Malcolm X to target readers.Also,target readers are expected to learn his experience of spreading Islamic doctrines in Hartford,the capital of Connecticut,and unfair treatments AfricanAmericans suffered in the history,related to housing,education,employment and so on.Besides,by introducing experience of Malcolm to target readers,the translator hopes to introduce racial problems in the US to target readers,so to provoke their thinking of the cultural diversity of China and the US.After analyzing the characteristics of the source text,the translator chooses linguistic adaptation theory of Jef Verschueren to solve problems in translation.This theory includes four different angles approaching linguistic phenomenon.Angles of the contextual correlates and elements of structure are used as the guidance of this translation task.The classification of different contexts in the theory helps the translator in the translation of culture-loaded expressions,and character features,while the description of elements of structure in the theory helps the translator to deal with complicated sentences and narrations interposed in the source text.Through this translation practice,the translator hopes to contribute to the translation of the biographical text.
