| With the development of English academic writing, both domestic and foreign scholars generally believe that it is important for academic writers to express their stance, especially in English research articles. In order to help Chinese scholars use academic stance more appropriately, this thesis explores the differences in the use of stance between Chinese and foreign scholars in English optical research articles. In this paper,100 English optical research articles were randomly selected from two self-built corpora Chinese Optics Letters(COL)and Optics and Lasers in Engineering(OLE).Based on the stance model of Hyland(2005b),the author applied Ant Conc to retrieve stance in the optical research articles at home and abroad. After manual retest, the raw frequency was obtained, and then the normalized frequency was processed. Finally, the author used Loglikelihood and Chi square Calculator 1.0 to analyze whether there were significant differences in the use of stance between the two corpora, and explained the reasons. The research finds that there is a significant difference in the use of stance in total number between Chinese and foreign research articles. The research articles in Chinese journals overuse expressions of stance.Firstly, there is a significant difference in the application of hedges in research articles between Chinese and foreign journals, and research articles in foreign journals use hedges more.In the application of hedges, may and approximate and other stances are of significant differences.Approximately is usually used with numbers.Foreigners use approximately to match with numbers so as to represent round numbers and probability. However,Chinese scholars use approximately less frequently, and usually use the relatively simple expression about instead.Foreign scholars prefer to use the expression can be estimated, which means that unknown system parameters may be predicted through some method, emphasizing the method and the form of data presentation.Foreign scholars usually use may and would to express possibility, while Chinese scholars usually use could.Secondly, there are significant differences between Chinese and foreign scholars in the application of boosters, and Chinese scholars overuse boosters.Among them, there are significant differences in some stance expressions, such as demonstrate and true.Foreign scholars usually collocate demonstrate with results on the left to explain the experimental results, while Chinese scholars usually collocate demonstrate with we on the left to explain the experimental findings.Foreign scholars usually collocate true with measurement at the right side, while Chinese scholars often collocate true with coincidence at the right side.Thirdly, there is a significant difference in the use of attitude markers between Chinese and foreign scholars, but both of them use fewer attitude markers.Among them, even x and appropriate are of significant differences.Foreign scholars overuse appropriate, while Chinese scholars never use it.Fourthly, there is a significant difference in the use of self-mentions by Chinese and foreign scholars, and Chinese scholars overuse self-mentions.In the use of self-mentions,we and our are of significant differences. The research on the stance of English optical research articles between Chinese and foreign scholars can provide some enlightenment for Chinese scholars in English academic writing and improve their writing quality. |
