Whether in the field of stream of consciousness novel or feminism,as a literary critic or as a novelist,Virginia Woolf always sought to innovate in her literary works and produced a number of original and inspiring classics.Woolf’s novel writing practice was full of intellectual exploration, and her study of Greek and her appreciation of the spirit of ancient Greek literature was the starting point of her literary career. In the course of her long and intensive reading of ancient Greek literature,Woolf drew inspiration from it and adapted it in her writing practice, creatively incorporating the ancient Greek elements she sought into her own fictional practice. The idea of truth, the impersonal style of writing and the poetic art embodied in ancient Greek literature are absorbed and expressed in novels such as Mrs.Dalloway,The Voyage Out and The Waves;Elements of ancient Greek literature such as mythological characters, tragic patterns and epic structures are evident in novels such as Jacob’s Room,To the Lighthouse and Between the Acts;Under the influence of Plato’ s philosophy of Idea, the Pattern in Woolf’ s novels also has a wide scope for interpretation. In the course of writing,Woolf offers a unique interpretation of classic ancient Greek literature and phenomena from the perspective of the interaction between modern and classical civilization, and offers many profound reflections on the problems of the modern Western patriarchal model of civilization. In her constant return to and search for the spiritual core of ancient Greek civilization,it is clear that Woolf was deeply influenced by ancient Greek literature and art. However,Researches on Woolf in the last century have been dominated by feminist and modernist issues, and there is a lack of research on Woolf’ s relationship with ancient Greek literature, which has become an area of Woolf studies that needs to be explored.Taking ancient Greek literature as a cornerstone and a close reading of the text as the basis, this thesis is a preliminary exploration of the ancient Greek factors in Woolf’ s novels. It is divided into four aspects: the incorporation of ancient Greek literary and artistic concepts into Woolf’ s novels;the borrowing and rewriting of ancient Greek mythology and epic poetry,Woolf’ s Pattern and Plato’s Idea, and the search for a balance between classical and modern civilization. The four dimensions of Woolf’s novels are interpreted in order to distil the ancient Greek elements in her novels and to explore Woolf’s inheritance, innovation and development of ancient Greek literary and artistic concepts.
