A Practice Report On E-C Translation Of The Essential Turing Under The Guidance Of Newmark’s Text Typology Theory

Scientist biographies play a very important role as a carrier for readers to understand the thoughts of scientific and technical achievements.It’s a worthwhile study topic to study the translation of scientist biographies.The author summarizes the problems appeared in the translation process of The Essential Turing into two aspects: the realization of informative function and vocative function.The problems in the realization of informative function include: inaccurate translation of technical terminology,improper wording of polysemy,illogical translation of sci-tech complex sentence,incoherence of discourse.The problems in the realization of vocative function include: improper selection of sentence patterns for target readers and mishandling of language style.Peter Newmark put forward the text typology theory and divided texts into expressive text,informative text,and vocative text.Under the guidance of Newmark’s text typology theory,the author puts forward corresponding translation strategies.To realize the informative function of the text,translators can adopt the strategies of semantic translation and transliteration,adopting approximate vocabulary,rephrasing and reconstructing complex sentence,adjusting sentence order and adding conjunction;and to realize the vocative function,translators can adopt the strategies of converting sentence patterns not acceptable to target readers,and analyzing and converting language style.
