| Homework is an indispensable part of the teaching process. It is not only an important means to consolidate and expand students’ learning, but also an important tool for teachers to check students’ learning effects and understand students’ learning conditions. With the improvement of education quality and the advancement of curriculum reform, the homework design plays an increasingly important role in the entire teaching process.Over the years,English teachers have designed homework mainly in the form of monotonous copying, reciting and doing a lot of exercises. This homework mode not only fails to stimulate students’ enthusiasm, but also is not conducive to students’ all-round development. The proposal of the “double reduction”policy is a key turning point in the design of the homework. It is proposed to reduce the heavy homework burden of students, bring the homework design into the teaching and research system, and teachers should systematically design basic homework that conforms to age characteristics and learning rules and embodies the orientation of quality education,so as to improve the quality of homework design.Recently, the combination of homework design and homework burden reduction is becoming a new research direction, and it also brings some challenges to teachers in designing homework.Based on the zone of proximal development theory and multiple intelligences theory, the author takes students in Grade 8 of Xi’an Foreign Language School as research subjects and adopts the methods of questionnaire and interview to analyze and discuss the following three questions:(1)What are students’ views on the current situation of English homework?(2)What are teachers’ views on the current situation of English homework?(3)What are the main factors that teachers consider when designing English homework? This study finds that after the implementation of the “double reduction” policy, many students believe that the amount of homework is reduced, but the content and the form of homework assigned by teachers are highly test-oriented.Teachers have a one-sided understanding of homework burden reduction, and they often assign homework of fixed difficulty. In addition, when designing homework, teachers not only lack negotiation of the total amount of homework, but also focus too much on short-term goals while ignoring the long-term development of students.Based on the above findings, this study puts forward some suggestions for the problems existing in the design of homework. |
