Vocabulary learning is an extremely important part of English learning,and vocabulary learning strategies are one of the key motivating factors for improving vocabulary learning.With deep learning coming into focus under the requirements of core literacy in English,vocabulary learning strategies are closely related to deep learning,and appropriate learning strategies help students to learn vocabulary effectively.So it is important to investigate the current situation of junior middle school students’ use of vocabulary learning strategies from the perspective of deep learning.However,at present,most junior middle school students’ vocabulary learning is stuck in mechanical memorization,lacking the ability to use vocabulary,unable to use scientific English vocabulary learning strategies,and staying in superficial learning.Most of the studies were about the correlation between vocabulary learning strategies and academic performance or gender,and few studies have combined deep learning with vocabulary learning strategies.Given all that,this research investigates the current situation of vocabulary learning strategies of junior middle school students in Xi’ an No.2 Foreign Language School based on a deep learning perspective.The researcher conducted a questionnaire survey with 117 second-year junior middle school students and classroom observations with four teachers,and interviews with four second-year junior middle school students in order to investigate the current situation of junior middle school students’ English vocabulary learning strategies based on a deep learning perspective,to explore the factors that influence junior middle school students’ use of English vocabulary learning strategies,and to provide suggestions for teachers to better develop students’ ability to use English vocabulary learning strategies.This research will address the following questions.1.Based on deep learning,what is the current situation of junior middle school students’ use of English vocabulary learning strategies in each dimension?2.Currently,do teachers in junior middle schools motivate students’ English vocabulary learning strategies? If so,what are the approaches adopted?3.Based on a deep learning perspective,what are the factors that influence junior middle school students’ use of vocabulary learning strategies?Firstly,from the questionnaire and interview,it showed that the overall use of English vocabulary learning strategies among junior middle school students was moderate.The best use vocabulary learning strategy was the cognitive strategy(with a mean of 3.40),followed by the metacognitive strategy(with a mean of 3.39).The least used vocabulary learning strategy was the activation strategy(with a mean of3.1),with the resource strategy and memory strategy in the middle(with means of3.24 and 3.21 respectively),which showed that junior middle school students did not fully meet the requirements of deep learning in the use of English vocabulary learning strategies.Secondly,the research conducted classroom observations of teachers from four aspects,and the researcher found that in the actual vocabulary teaching,teachers did not consciously,adequately and systematically motivate students’ English vocabulary learning strategies to achieve deep learning.The four teachers observed rarely used questioning or discussion to activate students’ prior knowledge,which was not conducive to stimulating students’ thinking or developing the habit of making connections between prior and new knowledge.Teachers focused on teaching students how to use what they had learned,but were not good at using mind maps to integrate and summarize knowledge.Thirdly,the interviews revealed that there are various factors that influence students’ use of vocabulary learning strategies due to differences in learning levels and physical and mental development.From the objective aspect,the difficulty and importance of the vocabulary itself were important factors that affected students’ use of vocabulary learning strategies.From subjective aspect,students’ own learning habits and learning abilities were also important factors.The research put forward teaching suggestions for developing students’ vocabulary learning strategies after analyzing the current situation of junior middle school students’ use of vocabulary learning strategies in the hope that they will be useful for English teachers’ vocabulary teaching.
