A Report On Chinese-English Translation Of Huazhong Agricultural University Talent Training Program

The translation of university’s talent training program is of importance for improving a university’s talent competitiveness.The translator participates in the translation of Huazhong Agricultural University Talent Training Program.This report first reviews the entire translation process(including pre-translation,while-translation,and post-translation).It introduces the three rules of Skopos theory(skopos rules,coherence rule,and fidelity rule),and its application in the translation of informative text.Under the framework of Skopos theory,this report conducts case study at the lexical,syntactic,and textual levels.The major findings are as follows:At the lexical level,for the translation of verb-object structure,the addition is used to supplement the omitted information in the source text and enhance the coherence of the translation;for the translation of cultural-loaded words,literal translation is adopted to present the unique cultural elements in source text(ST),meanwhile explanatory footnotes and parenthetical notes are added to improve the readability of the translated text(TT).These translation methods and techniques are also applicable to the translation of terms.At the syntactic level,the shift from active voice to passive voice is employed to make the agent implicit,especially when unpleasant event is mentioned,so as to improve the acceptability of TT by readers.The adjustment of word order and the division are used for the translation of long sentences to keep a balance in the sentence and maintain the coherence of the source text so as to improve the fluency and readability of the TT.At the textual level,more grammatical cohesive devices such as reference,substitution are used in the Chinese-English translation,and different sentence types(coordinate clause in Chinese language vs subordinate clause in English language)are constructed in the Chinese-English translation.Additionally,in English language,more logical cohesive devices such as conjunctions are used to explicitly present logical relation to achieve explicit cohesion.All these adjustments are aimed to make TT conform to target language’s expression patterns to increase the fluency and readability of TT with the final purpose of achieving translation skopos.Taken together,when translating Huazhong Agricultural University Talent Training Program,the translator flexibly uses various translation methods and techniques according to the communicative purpose of the TT(skopos rule);the translator uses his own cross-cultural knowledge to accurately and fully convey the information of the ST(fidelity rule);the translator follows the expression pattern of the target language to enhance the readability,acceptability,and fluency of the TT(coherence rule).Overall,the translator draws on the skopos theory to process text in translation processes,thus improving the quality of translated text.This report provides the reference for the translation of the informative text.
