| Against the backdrop of globalization,English education has its greater implications than ever before as different countries and regions become increasingly connected. In the context of the “double reduction policy”,it is necessary to understand the situation of English education in China,Japan, and Korea, which are also part of East Asia,so that we can continue to explore suitable English education policies, theories, and methods for China. At present, there exist only a few translation texts in this field, and the translation practice of such specialized texts lacks essential theoretical guidance. Therefore, the first chapter of Teaching English in East Asia: A Teacher’s Guide to Chinese,Japanese, and Korean Learners was selected for this report. The translation practice is guided by the principle of “functionality plus loyalty”,which is based on the text analysis model of Christiane Nord, one of most outstanding representatives of the German functional school. The report first examines the linguistic features of the translation material, then identifies the function of the text, such as the informative function. The translation brief is explained, and the focus is on the ST analysis, including the intratextual and extratextual factors that influence the translation and the choice of translation strategies. Thus, the translation problems are illustrated.Based on this, the author of this study works to explore translation methods at the lexical, syntactic, and textual levels, and discusses them through case studies. In this translation practice, diction in translation, terminology translation, translation of culture loaded words, and translation methods of amplification and omission are explored at the lexical level, while division, reconstruction, and voice conversion are adopted at the syntactic level;as for the textual level, cohesion and preservation of the characteristics of the original text are emphasized. Therefore, these appropriate methods can be found under the guidance of Nord’s functional translation theory. It can be concluded that Nord’s functional translation theory is a useful guideline for the translation of such informative texts, which helps to better convey the information of the original text, retain its professional characteristics and make the translation more readable and understandable. |
