| Textbooks are an important part of curriculum implementation.Choosing and using appropriate textbooks is an important prerequisite for the completion of curriculum content and the realization of curriculum objectives.New textbooks have been released one after another as part of the new cycle of curricular reform.The current study of textbooks is focused on gaining a deeper understanding of the characteristics of new textbooks in order to better support teaching.The suggestions of the compilation of textbooks in The English Curriculum Standard for Senior High(2017 Edition)proposed that textbooks compilation should be guided by the topic and focus on activities.And the learning units of the textbook are design as a whole.This thesis compares the two editions of the New High School English Textbook,PEP(the textbook released by the People’ s Education Press in 2019)and Yilin(the textbook published by the Yilin Press in 2020),intending to answer the following three questions and explore the similarities and differences between the two editions in the cultivation of the key competency of English.(1)What are the differences and similarities in the topic of the learning unit design between the PEP and the Yilin?(2)What are the differences and similarities in the activity of the learning unit design between the PEP and the Yilin?(3)What are the differences and similarities in the structure of the learning unit design between the PEP and the Yilin?In terms of topic,the context of topic and the topic of the learning unit are compared.In terms of activity,the form of activity,including the type of activity and the number of participants in the activity,and the content of activity,including the skills activity and knowledge activity,are compared.In terms of structure,the overall framework of the two editions of textbooks,and the structure of learning unit plate and the framework of the workbook are compared.The results show that,in terms of topic,the two versions of the textbooks cover the three major topics listed in The English Curriculum Standard for Senior High(2017 Edition).And the differences are reflected in the content of the topic groups,the choice of topics and the coherence of the situations between the learning units.It is also found that culture consciousness cultivation in the PEP textbook is more explicit and the ideological education is more intuitive.In terms of activity,there is a high overlap in the types of activities,and the differences are reflected in the skills emphasized,the sequence of the activities and the setting of phonetic activities.In the training of language ability,the training system of listening and speaking ability in PEP textbook unit is more complete than that of Yilin textbook unit.In training of thinking capacity,there are more activities to train writing in Yilin textbook unit.In the training of learning ability,grammar activities are used to cultivate autonomous learning ability in the two editions.In terms of structure,there are differences in the number of learning units,contents and appendices between the two editions,and the differences in learning units are mainly the combination of skills.In the workbook,the difference manifests in the exercise multiplicity and the significance.The following suggestions for textbook compilation are given based on the findings of the comparative study:(1)to increase the importance attached to phonological competence in the textbook;(2)to focus on the diversity of activities;(3)to focus on the consistency of the context of the textbook;and(4)to focus on the design of activities that combine knowledge points and skills.The suggestions for textbook use are as follows: teachers should pay attention to(1)grasp the situation;(2)excavate the cultural content;and(3)use the teaching materials flexibly. |
