Lin Shu is renowned as the pioneer for the translation of western literature.In spite of his unfamiliarity with foreign language,more than 100 kinds of novels are successfully translated.Wonderful elegance and lifelike relevance are intersected among lines,which heralds a new ground for Chinese literary translation.Since the publication of Joan Haste,one of Lin’s masterpiece,popularity has been obtained throughout the world and overwhelming concern has been raised.However,there are few researches over Lin’s translation of Joan Haste and his translation characteristic need to be deeply probed into.Compositional translatology is deeply rooted in Chinese traditional compositional theory and holds an attitude of writing during translation process.By virtue of deconstruction of Yan Fu’s “loyalty,expressiveness and elegance”,“three matchings in meaning,genre and literary strength” is formed,which proposes a new criteria to measure the quality of translation and explores a theoretical system with Chinese characteristics.Lin’s profound attainment in ancient writing and flexible structure arrangement are a better interpretation of traditional compositional theory.It can be observed that compositional translatology enjoys a strong explanatory power in research over Lin’s translation of Joan Haste.But there is no related research over Lin’s translation of Joan Haste based on compositional translatology.Through comparison between the original and target text,this paper starts from the three aspects of “meaning,genre and literary strength” with the intention to make a more comprehensive and deeper analysis of the accomplishment method as well as influential factors behind three matchings in during the translation of Joan Haste.It turns out that at the level of matching in meaning,no matter the expression of linguistic subjective meaning or emotional expression between lines,it not only retains the truth of the original text,but also does not adhere to the strict obedience of it in the process of words choice and idea direction.Each word is attached with with clear articulation and sincere feeling.Secondly,at the level of matching in genre,in Lin’s translation of Joan Haste,by taking in the innovative style of western fiction,a kind of language that is more suitable for target readers is created in an eclectic way.A unique classical literature genre is demonstrated,the text style is combined with softness and rigidity,the passage is neatly and orderly laid out and the structure is properly tailored.The genre is generated naturally and strictly.Secondly,at the level of matching in literary strength,the literary strength is powerful and language is appropriate.The combination of prose and parallel prose polishes metrical beauty of language;poetic and pictorial images sketch the lively aura of the text;closing to textual fact fuses text with harmoniousness.Glamour and vividness are penetrated.The exploration of compositional translatology in Lin’s translation of Joan Haste systematically describes the stylistic characteristics of Lin’s translation of Joan Haste.It not only strongly verifies the application of compositional translatology in translation practice and has the locate translation discourse constructed,but also breaks the limitation of previous research perspectives such as ideology and rewriting theories,etc.Research perspective for modern literary translation is enriched and referential suggestion for research over foreign literature is provided.
