The translation practice selects the theme of hydropower generation, and on this basis the translation practice is reflected from the perspective of functional equivalence theory, aiming to provide more experience for the translation of emerging energy technologies. The original report assesses the impact of climate change on hydropower in Latin America and develops a set of targeted impacts. This translation practice report is based on the translation practice of the International Energy Agency’s Climate Impacts on Latin American Hydropower(Chapters 1-5).The source text is rigorous and informative, containing a large number of abstract nouns,passive-voice statements, tables and so on.Based on Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory, this paper mainly analyzes the source text from the perspectives of vocabulary, syntax, discourse and style, with the analysis of all these aspects, exploring how this theory influences the choices of translation strategies, and how the strategies chosen affect the translation work. This translation task will enable our country to ensure the sustainable operation of existing hydropower facilities and to work together with other countries to address the impacts of climate change on hydropower.According to the functional equivalence theory, the translation of abstract nouns should be specific and concise, and graphs should be exact and rigorous through the use of drawing tools. In addition, compound sentences can be divided into multiple independent Chinese sentences by adding or omitting subjects or logical words to ensure fluency and simplicity. Finally, textual coherence can be realized not only through conjunctions, but also through repetition, substitution and omission of the same word. Therefore, translators should strengthen bilingual ability. At the same time, translators need to accumulate experience to flexibly apply in translation practice.
