Ludwig van Beethoven(1770-1827),in the course of his musical career, composed five sonatas for piano and cello, which resonate his compositional style across different times. In the process of composing these five sonatas,Beethoven had been constantly refining the balance between piano and cello. In this paper,I analyze Beethoven’s Sonata No.3 in A major for piano and cello(Op.69 Nr.3)and interpret the three main balancing techniques for piano and cello as the main content of the discussion.Beethoven used different compositional techniques to express the balance between the two instruments. As a piano player,I will focus on the technical aspects of the piano part in the balance, such as the control of tonal intensity and the direction of the long phrases. This essay is divided into three parts:the first part is the introduction, the second part is the body, and the third part is the conclusion.Through the analysis of this work, the author hopes to provide a more multidimensional perspective for the performer, and to add valuable theoretical references for a better understanding of the work.
