This paper mainly studies the architectural decoration patterns existing in Ming and Qing residential buildings in southeastern Shanxi.Architectural decorative patterns have a long history. From the Tang and Song Dynasties to the Ming and Qing Dynasties, they have become prosperous. There are many research materials that can be collected, which can more comprehensively display local folk culture and analyze the composition of patterns. Therefore, taking the decorative patterns of the local Ming and Qing Dynasties residential buildings as the research object,we can explore the cultural connotation projected behind the architectural decorative patterns, and observe the correlation with the regional environment and local culture.Mainly by collecting the decorative patterns of residential buildings in the southeastern of Shanxi,Ming and Qing Dynasties, and based on the volume and structure of residential building components, the patterns are classified, analyzed and studied.According to the main elements reflected in the decorative patterns of the southeastern residential buildings in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, they are divided into basic patterns, single patterns, and combined patterns. The basic pattern is composed of unit elements, which are classified and described according to the different unit elements.According to the definition of the research object, the basic pattern categories within the research scope are sorted out,and the geometric patterns and curvilinear patterns with two-sided continuity are further refined classification;extract the text patterns with special properties involved in the patterns, and study their styles and functions. The single element patterns are the basis of the combined pattern. The classic study of the single patterns include the meaning and description of the single patterns, and the classification characteristics are explained and compared in the form of a table.According to the research and classification of basic patterns and single patterns, the structure and meaning of pattern combinations are extended. The classification of combined patterns is mainly based on the meaning of the pattern,it is classified according to the actual situation of the volume and structure of the building components. It is mainly of the classification of three types of structures based on the scope of the components, that is,the combination within the same pattern, the combination on the same component, and the same structure. The combination of similar components on the courtyard or building, based on explaining its meaning, discusses the level and cultural nature of the components and architectural decorative patterns. After researching the combined patterns,I selected specific door decoration examples, compared the development of merchants’ status in Ming and Qing Dynasties and the integration of identity changes through the hierarchy of patterns, and used them as physical data to explain the local knowledge about the integration of the relationship between scholars and merchants.Historical background evolution.
