| African drama highly summarizes the local cultural life.At present, the attention of the domestic academia to African drama is less than that of the western academia, and naturally there are some gaps-in the breadth and depth of the research results. The lack of African drama’s translation is obviously an important reason of such a situation. With the deepening of cultural exchanges between China and Africa, the importance of African drama translation has become increasingly prominent, which is of extraordinary significance for Chinese people to understand African culture and promote cultural exchanges between China and Africa and related research. This translation practice report selects This Time Tomorrow, the representative work of the celebrated Kenyan dramatist Ngugi Wa Thiong’O,and Birthdays Are Not For Dying, the representative work of the famous Nigerian dramatist Femi Osofisan,as translation texts, focusing on the Chinese translation of culture-loaded words and exploring applicable translation methods and techniques.By combing and expounding the pre-translation,during-translation and post-translation process in detail, this translation practice report was successfully completed and drew the following conclusions:As a literary text, the main purpose of African drama is to serve and entertain the readers(audiences).Although the essence of drama is performance, the mission of the script is to satisfy the reader’s reading experience, which exactly echoes the core view of Reception Aesthetics theory that the reader is the center. As the carrier of culture in African drama, the translation of culture-loaded words is vital for readers to correctly understand the text. Therefore, when translating culture-loaded words in such texts, the translator needs to make a prediction based on the target readers’familiarity with African culture, and reasonably choose transliteration, literal translation and variation translation to ensure the accurate transmission of cultural information. In addition, the proper use of the addition translation technique will effectively reduce the influence of cultural differences and improve the readability of the translation, thus satisfying the readers’cognitive ability and reading habits. |
