Assam,a mountainous region in northeastern India with the Brahmaputra river on three sides,has a humid climate and fertile soil suitable for tea.In the 1920 s and 1930 s,after the British occupied Assam,it was the first time for British India to grow tea,which broke the original pattern of tea production in the world and created the status of India as a tea power.This paper mainly studies the formation,operation,problems and influence of tea industry in Assam from 1838 to 1901.Firstly,it analyzes the background and motivation of the British in Assam.It describes how tea came to England and became so popular that the British played an important role in the tea trade.The superior geographical position and climate conditions suitable for tea planting in Assam are discussed.It further summarizes that The British colonists put Assam into the territory of British India,laying a foundation for tea cultivation in the later period.The second part describes the situation of the British tea plantation in Assam,from the tea industry trial operation and land development to the formal operation of Assam tea production,management and sales,and then the distribution and quantity of tea plantations in Assam are summarized.The third part analyzes the main problems in the development process of Assam tea industry,which are divided into two aspects of tea diseases and insect pests and labor.Summarized the causes of the problems and colonial government and tea industry capitalists to cope with the measures.Finally,the influence of the development of Assam tea industry is discussed.This paper first discusses the natural and social influence of Assam,and then discusses the driving role of Assam tea industry in the development of British Indian tea industry,and then summarizes the learning situation of Indian tea industry led by Assam in the world.Through a comprehensive investigation of the development of tea industry in Assam region,and comprehensive analysis of various factors in the development of Assam tea industry.The main reasons for Assam’s success are as follows: first,the support of national policies;Second,strong capital support;3.Scientific management mode;4.Use of tea making machines;5.Excellent natural geographical environment;6.Cheap source of labor.These reasons create a good development environment for Assam tea industry,improve the efficiency and quality of tea production,reduce the cost of tea,enhance the competitiveness of Assam tea in the market,and jointly promote the rise of Assam tea industry.
