A Translation Report Of Stylistic Markers Under Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

The essence of literary translation relies on how to translate its style,and so does novel translation.The artistic features manifested in the creation process of the style of a novel are the soul of the literary work,which plays an important role in character creation and scene reproduction.In the process of literary translation,it is necessary not only to accurately convey the content of the source text,but also to reproduce the style of the original style.Therefore,novel translators need to pay special attention to style translation.Although most scholars in the field of translation believe that style is translatable,there is still a lack of macro-theoretical guidance in translation practice.Based on the Chinese translation of the British writer Nigel Hamilton’s biographical novel The Mantle of Command:RDR at War,1941-1942,(hereinafter referred to as The Mantle of Command),the report divides the formal stylistic marker of The Mantle of Command into three groups,namely lexical markers,syntactic markers and register markers on the basis of Stylistic Markers Theory proposed by Liu Miqing(2005).Then,according to Jef Verschueren’s(2000)Adaptation Theory,the report analyzes how to choose appropriate translation methods and translation strategies through three theoretical dimensions of the theory:contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability,and salience of adaptation process,so as to solve the difficulties in the translation of these stylistic markers as well as to achieve the reproduction of the style.This report finds that translators can flexibly choose translation methods and strategies through the three theoretical dimensions,so as to enable the target readers to perceive the formal markers of the source text.With the regard to the translation of idioms and nominalization of verbs in lexical markers,the translator adopts free translation and conversion methods under the guidance of contextual correlates of adaptability to reproduce the psychological and social world of characters in the source text;for the translation of parallel sentences and elliptical sentences in syntactic markers,the translator adopts Chinese four-character structure translation strategy and literal translation method by adapting to the language structure of the target language in order to overcome obstacles in the transmission of information in translation;for the translation of addressing terms and colloquialism in register markers,the translator adopts the domestication strategy,omission and division method under the guidance of salience of adaptation process,to reproduce the register style of the source text.
