Play insect culture is an important part of ancient Chinese street culture,and the insect container is an important material achievement of play insect culture.The ceramic insect container flourished in the Ming Dynasty and prospered in the Qing Dynasty,under the influence of social aesthetic style,customs of fighting insects,and level of production technology.A batch of famous makers of containers achieved success,leaving many famous insect containers.This article classifies the shapes and decorations of the Ming and Qing ceramic insect containers collected by archaeological excavation,museum collection,and folk collection.The standard specimens are determined by combining the specimens of kiln sites,tombs,and museum collections,and the period research on the ceramic insect containers is carried out from the perspectives of document analysis and typology analysis.According to the main features and develop rules of the ceramic cricket containers in the Ming and Qing Dynasties,they are divided into three periods:the early and middle periods of the Ming Dynasty,the late period of the Ming Dynasty and the early period of the Qing Dynasty,and the middle and late periods of the Qing Dynasty.The evolution of the Ming and Qing porcelain fighting basin and the Ming and Qing official ceramic basin were discussed.Through the above-mentioned research on the evolution of the form of Ming and Qing ceramic cricket containers,it is analyzed that the play insect culture developed from the top down.It started from the royal favor in the early Ming Dynasty,became the spiritual sustenance of literati in the late Ming Dynasty,and finally evolved into daily entertainment for the public,making this activity popular.
