With the popularity of the Internet, the use of social networking sites has brought great convenience to our lives. At the same time, researchers have noted that the use of social networking sites(SNS)has a non-negligible impact on the psychology and behavior of users. Some studies have found that social networking site use can promote mental health and enhance interpersonal capital. And some studies have also found that SNS use tends to be positively associated with anxiety and depression. With the deepening of the study, the researcher made specific divisions of SNS usage behavior, active SNS use and passive SNS use.Passive SNS use is an information-consuming behavior, studies have found that it is often associated with negative consequences. The study will examined the relationship between passive SNS use and aggression, and the mediating roles of fear of missing out(Fo MO)and self-control.From the perspective of passive use of the social network site,it is important to explore the effects of passive social networking site use on individuals’ negative behaviors in order to provide theoretical guidance and empirical support for mental health educators to intervene. This study used a questionnaire method, with a combination of online and offline, participants including 1068 students from several universities in Sichuan and Wuhan province in China to join our study, after excluding 198 invalid responses that were not filled out carefully and were not answered all questions,870 students completed surveys and filled out all of the forms. This study draws the following conclusions:(1)There were significant gender differences in passive SNS use、Fo MO and self-control,and girl scored significantly higher on passive SNS use and Fo MO than boy,boy scored significantly higher on self-control than girl;there is not significant gender difference in aggression. There were not significant residential and grading differences in passive SNS use、Fo MO、self-control and aggression. There were significant major differences in passive SNS use、Fo MO and self-control,and social science students scored significantly higer on passive SNS use than engineering students, social science students scored significantly higer on Fo MO than engineering students and students in other majors, engineering students scored significantly higer on self-control than social science students;there is not significant major difference in aggression.(2)There was a significant positive correlation between passive SNS use、aggression and fear of missing out,and a significant negative correlation between passive SNS use and self-control;there was a significant negative correlation between Fo MO and self-control,and a positive correlation between Fo MO and aggression;there was a significant negative correlation between self-control and aggression.(3)Multiple mediation modeling indicated that there are three significant indirect pathways in the impact of passive SNS use on aggression: passive SNS use-Fo MO-aggression;passive SNS use-self control-aggression;passive SNS use-Fo MO-self control-aggression.(4)Multi-group analysis found that gender had a significant moderating effect on the three pathways of the chain mediation model, which were: Firstly,in the paths of Fo MO-self control, the path coefficients of the male group are significantly higher than that of the female group.Secondly,in the paths of self control-aggression,the path coefficients of the male group are significantly higher than that of the female group.Thirdly,in the paths of Fo MOaggression, the path coefficients of the female group are significantly higher than that of the male group.(5)Through multi-group analysis found that residence plays a moderating role in the impact of passive SNS use on self-control,the path coefficients of the urban group are significantly higher than that of the rural group. This study suggests that college students’ passive SNS use will lead to their aggressive behavior,it may work by improving Fo MO and decreasing self-control,and this process is different in different genders and residential.
